Cool, will do when we get there. Maybe we can meet up for a beer and some van talk. I still got a lot to learn.

Re: Bought a 1964 Econoline today!
Woo Hoo! the new 200ci started for the 1st time today! Timing a little off, but I will take care of that when I get back from San Diego. Man that put a smile on my face, already sounds more throaty compared to the 170 without even having headers.
Need to post up some updated pics of some other work ive gotten done to.
Happy Vannin

Re: Bought a 1964 Econoline today!
Been almost 3 months since my last update. The van is just sitting on the stands. The new motor I put it had a bad oil pump, figured that out when I fired it up and had no oil squirting with valve cover off. Sounds good, but I only ran it for a moment. going to pick up the oil pump this weekend and see if I can get that done.

Re: Bought a 1964 Econoline today!
I never touched the oil pump on the new motor. Never even removed the pan. I will take it off pack it with some vasoline and see what happens. I did remove the distributor and used a electric drill to spin it, no oil was pumping..

Re: Bought a 1964 Econoline today!
All right guys,
Oil pan is off and I have removed the oil pump. I tested it by sticking the filter tube in oil and spinning it with my drill pumps like a champ. So as mentioned above I need to get it primed in order for it to start properly pumping to the valves or something else is clogged somewhere..

Re: Bought a 1964 Econoline today!
next thing to look at -now the pump is primed- what drives the pump shaft?? usually distributor shaft -below the drive gear off cam. yet does depend on the engine also - some makers are different! If its ford=?/ see if the shaft is broken somewhere inside that gear?? usually a pin u can remove on that drive gear to remove the gear? see if shaft is broken @ that point? possibly = wrong dist shaft lenght due to diff dist . being used?? yet i wouldnt think so? Check the drive. also make sure the dist . hold down was installed-ive seen that overlooked or left very loose allowing dist to climb up- disengagueing the pump!!

Re: Bought a 1964 Econoline today!
Spent a few hours in the garage with my neighbor trying to get this motor right
I wound up buying a new oil pump for good measure and installed it. Oil pan back on filled with oil. We primed the oil pump using a electric drill in a clockwise rotation. You can here the oil pump quirting but oil is not getting up to the valves. WTF is going on. Going to call around tomorrow a few mechanics and see what there thoughts are. At this point I regret pulling the 170 and putting in this 200, but this should not be something this difficult. Any thoughts on why else it would not pump? A brand new primed oil pump.

Re: Bought a 1964 Econoline today!
look into some plugs - usually found in front of block area under timing cover - prime again & like 4 a leak in that area??
also-did you actually pour oil down into where pump mounts & turn the pump shaft before installing the pump??????????

you and me both.
I did some research and found that most say to prime the pump counter clockwise which i did not do. I will see if that makes a difference tomorrow.

Re: Bought a 1964 Econoline today!
Ray!! = You must prime the pump =BEFORE its installed on the engine!! Pour some oil into the pickup tube as its inverted in ur hands & turn the drive rod by hand. Both ways to be sure the pump sucks oil into the gears & up into where it actually mounts on the engine. After thats done bolt it on & get all back together & fill pan with oil & start it = all should be fine for ya

Re: Bought a 1964 Econoline today!
hey guys, i have not touched the van since November. The oil pressure problem was pissing me off and seeing as its not my daily driver I closed her up so I could focus on the holidays. Went out today removed the oil pan and oil pump again. Got to get to the bottom of this NO oil pressure issue or have her towed to a shop and have them figure it out. Going to be in and out of the garage over the next week or two and see if this mystery can be solved.

Re: Bought a 1964 Econoline today!
Get a manual.
Fill the pump with oil and turn it to make sure it's fully primed.
Install it and the pan, then turn it in the same direction as the dist. turns.
I don't know about the 200 Fords, but Mopar V8s do NOT lube constantly to the rocker shafts. they are fed by a passage in the cam and 2 holes in the bearing. This 'pulses' oil to the shafts. That's why I say to get a service manual so you KNOW how the oiling works and can troubleshoot it.

Re: Bought a 1964 Econoline today!
ok heres where im at.
Oil pump primed, bolted on. ( im guessing a gasket does not go between the pump and the block because there was not one when i took off the og nor was there one with the new pump)
I took off the oil filter when priming the pump through the dist shaft to make sure oil was traveling to the oil filter. Check that off, no problem
Oil is making its way to the op switch and tube for the mechanical guage.
I removed the valve cover and rocker shaft to see if i can see the oil squirting. When priming with a drill oil is coming up to the head but at a snails pace. Problem!
I glad to see that the oil is traveling through although not enough pressure. I talked with a old timer (my 60yr old neighbor) who has been helping me trouble shoot my op issue. He talked with his mechanic who thinks the issue may very well be the cam bearings...
sounds like the fella I bought the motor from wasnt entirely honest. What can you do..

fire it & watch the rockers -thats the final test - as oil wont flow as good using a drill as with the pump actually running!! fire it!!

Dont quote me but I am fairly certain there is a gasket there.

Re: Bought a 1964 Econoline today!
for all us mechaniks types- suggestion!! from experiences- if the oil pump pickup has to be pressed into the actual pump body?? spot weld it after pressing it in - 1-2 places will Guarentee it wont vibrate out & fall into the pan some day .

Re: Bought a 1964 Econoline today!
i will be working on it some more to see what we can figure out. checking the oil gallery plug Rod to see if thats the culprit. we ran did have it fired up a the oil is barley moving through. Not enough to keep the head oiled..
