Update on my Van Empty Update on my Van

Post by Slick Steve Mon Aug 16, 2010 7:00 pm

Just wanted to give everyone an update on my progress. After a carb rebuild, new points and condenser it is running like a champ! It is at the brake shop getting new wheel cylinders, new master cylinder, and new hardware and shoes. It looks like a have a small leak in the heater core, but have found a new one at NAPA for under $40, so that is coming soon. I also bought new smoothie wheels and baby moons. I dropped the wheels off today to get powdercoated, and should get them back by the end of the week. Next week I will get the tires mounted and balanced, and I should be good to go!

I will post some more pics soon!

Well after a new MC, brake shoes, wheels cylinders, hardware, wheel bearings and seals the ole' van will stop on a dime. However, while on the lift a little water leak was found. It appears it is a leaky freeze plug. Probllem is, its the one behind the bellhousing. So now the transmission has to come out to get the pesky plug replaced. I hope to get it all done and on the road with the new wheels this coming week. Pics to come!

Have them replace all of them back there, and expect to do the rest too.

Well, the freeze plug has been fixed. However the clutch is junk, so we are going to replace that and a little leaky rear main seal. Should be good to go soon! The clutch kit was a little hard to find. Anyone else have this problem?

There is another thread going on...about clutch shudder... Since you've been there..what size engine are you running? What size clutch you got? 10"? and where did you find it and how much did you have to pay for it.. ?

Ok, so it sounds like we are back up and running. Seems the spring inside the radiator hose came apart and the largest part of it was wadded up at the radiator inlet, and the rest of the little pieces we in the radiator. After getting that mess cleaned up and a good flush job, we move on. A new thermostat and because the water pump veins looked shot, we threw on a new water pump. A higher volume one at that. No when you run the RPMs up it sucks the coolent level down in the radiator! So now we are flowing. We also flushed the bloack and whole system untill it ran clear. So the test drive on the interstate it stayed pretty cool, about right in the center of the guage. The bellypan is still not on, hopingI may not need it...we will see.

    Steve,
Sounds good and glad to hear you got it all fixed. On the belly pan? It plays a much need part in the cooling of your engine as well as protects your radiator from road debris. Hate to see you catch a nail or small rock after all that work to get it right...
