L6 charging system problems....

Hey guys,
Finally got my 65' Handi-van running with a donor 250. Got is started up and while running, volts to the battery were only 12.3v. Pulled alt. and put another one on and the same reading of 12.3v. Now I got a dead battery.... Do you think I need a new regulator?? There is a small (what looks like a regulator) box as well in the back of the doghouse with the "real" regulator...
I'm not a electrical guy (I'm a painter), so any help is appreciated.

From the main post on both Alt's. I have a reading of 12.3 and 12.0..... Do you think both Alt's are bad???? This reading is at about 1200-1500rpm...

GBest bet is to pull it and take it to the parts store and have them test it. This will remove all question if it's good or not. If it's good, check all the wiring. If good the the reg is a safe bet.

Dan, You are right on. The alt. tested out fine, so I picked up a new regulator and presto, 14.1v while running at idle!!! Now to go ahead with the other bad wiring.... But at least she runs!!!!!!

Yeah, it's still 1965 wiring all the way around!!!! Figure I'm going to have to replace over 1/2 the wiring just to be safe... Fuse block only has about 3 fuse holders left, so may get a universal block and rewire everything from there and start from scratch so to speak... But nice to hear her run and keep a charge!!

Just take your time and work on one section at a time. Don't be in a rush ( Or drink Beer while doing it) Either one will cause you to mess up your work.. Yes I'm speaking from experience....
