    Water pump? Empty Water pump?

Post by wideload Fri Jan 01, 2010 4:53 pm

Can someone explain or show me the difference between the long and short water pumps for a small block chevy? I think the one on my 283 is the short pump but don't have anything to compare it to.

I would say the long shaft is for 2 belt systems,,,,you measure the height of the flange, like how far it sticks out from the engine,,,,,,do you need a 2 belt pulley????? I will get you a measurement of a 6 cylinder pulley so maybe that E bay one will work,,,,,,,

So we are talking about the V8, right? 283-400 cu in engines,,,,,what is the hole spacing on the pulley,,,,,,1 1/4" (6 cyl) or 1 1/2" (8 cyl) center to center,,,,,,

Now if a water pump is drilled with 2 sets of holes and your fan holes could line up, then a 6 cyl pulley could probably work,,,,,,

Don I hadn't thought about comparing the two until I read your post. In your pic what are the two pumps off of ?

The bolt pattern on the 292 matches with the pattern on the 283 ( 1 1/4" center to center ) and the depth of the pulleys from both engines matches (2 3/4")back edge to face of pulley. Looks like the one on e-bay would work. I only need a single belt pulley, not running anything but the alternator.

What I'm trying to figure out now is do I have a long or short pump on the 283. When you look at the pulley selection in the catalogs it list them for long or short pumps. On my 283 the distance from the block to the front of the pump flange is 5 9/16". The pump is built in a horse shoe shape and bolts to the block on either side of the timing chain cover. With that measurement would it be a long or short?
