    Alternator light Empty Alternator light

    Post by Jay529 Tue Oct 16, 2018 2:55 pm

My alternator light just came on today. I pulled the battery cable off while it was running and sure enough it stalled. I figured I'd check here to see if there are any common issues with these that I should check first, and the best way to go about figuring out if it's the alternator, or wiring.

Jay, I found this thread using the search tab for alternator where Donivan talks about a way to test for voltage...Hope it helps...

In addition to the alternator, it could be the regulator. The old ones were adjustable.

You can take that alternator off and have it tested like at Autozone,,,,,,you can unplug the regulator and put 12 volts to the white wire on the end of the connector and see if that starts the alternator charging again,,,,or just get rid of that old underpowered   worn out system and put a 1 wire Chevy alternator on it,,,,,,,,

Guys, thanks for the info. I figured that since the engine dies as soon as I pull a battery cable off that the alternator must not be charging at all, so I bought a replacement alternator already. I was hoping to get it on today, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. I did use a 1 wire alternator on a Bronco I built years ago. Wish I would have thought of that before I bought the replacement Crying or Very sad
