When I got my 66 Falcon van 6 months ago the brake lights weren't working. I went to Carquest and bought a replacement switch. Installation went fine. But now, only a few months later I have no brake lights again. The brakes are working normally. If I push the pedal hard, like really hard they'll come on. So what's going on here? Could it be low on brake fluid? Maybe just a low quality replacement switch? What am I missing?

Re: Brake light switch
I've heard the quality of hydraulic brake switches has gone down. I didn't have any problems with my cheapo replacement I bought at O'Reilly's but I only drove it with that replacement a few months. I'd say it is the switch since the brakes are working fine. The pressure has to be there, the switch just isn't making b/c it's a chinese pos. I think Wilwood makes one and Napa *may have an american one but may not....

Re: Brake light switch
Maybe you can get a high quality one from a local hydraulics store?

Re: Brake light switch
Thanks for the input guys!
I had a similar problem on my 62 Galaxie 500 after I added a brake power booster. Replaced 4 switches in 2 years. Same switch as the van. I thought it couldnt handle the booster. Strange though, they list the same switch for powere and non power brakes. I finally replaced the hydraulic switch with a push button switch for an old Datsun. I made a bracket and positioned it above the brake pedal. It works great. But I can't figure a way to do that on the van.
Maybe I'm installing the switch wrong? I don't need to pre fill the switch with fluid, do I? Or maybe its dirty fluid wearing out the seal in the switch?
I think I'll call the hydraulic supply first, then wilwood.
Or I'll go to Napa and by a GM mechanical switch.
