    stutter/hesitation problem Empty stutter/hesitation problem

Post by shakeejake Sun Sep 07, 2014 7:42 pm

my van has been on the road for a little over a month. i got the engine to run good after sitting for 10+ years. however it started to get this weird hesitation when i accelerate. it shakes pretty violently then loosens up once it gets up to speed a little. happens mainly when accelerating from a stop. it will stop after about 3-5 seconds of accelerating. its a dodge 318. the carb was supposed to be overhauled before it sat but i think its no good. I want to just buy a new carb. if anybody has any suggestions that'd be great. i want to get a decent amount of power from the van but i still want it to run consistently. any help is appreciated.

Are the points and timing adjusted correctly,,,,,,,does the vacuum and centrifugal advance work,,,,,,can you see gas spraying down inside the carb as you push  the gas pedal down with the engine off?

all that was either replaced or re adjusted. the distirbuter is very old so i guess i can replace that first. the vacuum is new. and yes i can see gas spraying in the carb.

I think the timing chain was just replaced at a local service station.

My guess would be that after sitting for 10 years, the gas tank is starting to release some of the dried gas that sat in it. Clean the carb out real good, flush the fuel lines, and install a new see through gas filter. Starting there won't cost much, and might tell you what is going on.
