    Timing Tab Empty Timing Tab

Post by Dodger 359 Mon Apr 08, 2013 7:43 pm

Can someone please verify my understanding of the time tab on this 1967 Dodge A100 225 Slant 6. I am thinking the hole is zero and the marks indicate 5 degrees. It is stamped before and after for people like me. Is this correct?

and those old leaning tower of power engines were real bad for the vibration dampner moving on the rubber so don't get real excited that the timing might be off a bunch with a timing lite.

    Book specs are:

    Plug Gap: .035
    Dwell: 42 degrees
    Point Gap: .020
Timing: 5 Degrees Before Top Dead Center
    Idle (Neutral): 550 RPMs
Valve Lash: .010 Intake, .020 Exhaust (Fully warmed Engine

Hope it's correct. Gonna check mark with the ole coat hanger trick.

One more question. Do I need to plug the distributor hose or the barb on the carb or both?

    Thanks

So long as the vacuum is interrupted/blocked from the advance, you are fine. Either pull the hose from the advance and plug the line OR disconnect the hose at the carb and plug off the port.

Ok, I disconnected the hose from the carb and plugged the port with a piece of hose with a bolt plugging it and left the distributor hose unblocked, hanging in the wind. Comments?

... is there a way to get to the "real" numbers??, i took the balancer from my old six to put on an newer engine that says 12 btdc, Dodger359 numbers is 5 btdc, i find the numbers away from each other , is there a reason for that???.....corrosive

My timing tab only shows 10 degrees before and after TDC. If my timing was 12 BTDC, I would have to eyeball it. I have read 0 TDC as well as 5 TDC for 225 slants. Also read of differences if you have Clean Air Packages on the motor.

that's where an adjustable timing lite comes into play. a small knob on the lite with a dial to show where the marks are in relation to the vehicles timing.

I was able to check the TDC mark with the upper most position of cylinder 1 and looks like it is close if not right on the money. Thanks for all the information.

Hmmm, I do not have a dwell meter but will get one soon. What kind of symptoms would an improper dwell setting produce?
