Timing marks - where are they? Empty Timing marks - where are they?

Post by Drew Peacock Tue Oct 09, 2012 4:35 am

I will be taking my distributor out to install a pertronix unit and i cant seem to locate the timing marks on the engine. Where are they? If I am sitting on the drivers side, should i see them straight down or are they on the passenger side? I am completely off and they are underneath? Any help is appreciated.

I find that the stupid radiator support is generally right in the way of trying to see the timing marks.

Wow thats great. I was WAY off the mark on the area i was cleaning to find the timing marks. How does one get around that then to get the timing right on a running engine? Can you just manage to see it when you get the light on the area and you are hunched over the engine? I will mark the dist and rotor and shaft, etc. all before i remove it so i get it back in the right spot when i reassemble, but i still need to time it to make sure i have it a 10 degrees btdc.

You can make your own marks with White out or paint anywhere you can see them,,,,,so at least you can get back to whatever the timing was set to before,,,,,,in case you can't get to read the real marks....

place a mark on the dist body below the number 1 terminal on the cap before removal,Then Take off dist cap and manual turn engine to where the rotor is at that mark .then your timing marks on the motor and pulley should be close to each other

Thanks guys.   Yesterday I got it sorted out and also make a nice little post for those that need to find their marks and using a timing light method.
