front suspension question Empty front suspension question

Post by uncle ron Thu May 31, 2012 11:01 pm

My left front wheel sticks out approx. 1 in. more than the right, is this normal? Had front end apart (shop needed to measure old springs and van is not driveable), put everything back together while waiting for new springs. Old wheels were narrower and maybe difference wasn't as noticeable, or did I put tab A in slot B ? thanks for any help.

Welcome to Vintage Vans!!! Did you notice of there was a problem before they took the front end apart? If not maybe they didn't put something back together right.

thanks for the welcome. I took it apart so maybe I put it together wrong. it looked simple enough. the temporary wheels on the front are wide, just for rollers, making it look obvious. I've owned the 69 since 1970, but it hasn't been on the road since 1983. can't remember this being a problem before if it is a problem, but then again I can't remember what I had for breakfast.

Welcome ! "...I can't remember what I had for breakfast." LOL join the club ! Just wondering if you have checked the backspacing on the wheels? Sometimes similar looking rims can have that difference. Also just worn shackles or bushings and such would allow it to be out of whack that much if it ended up setting just right.

The wheels are a matched pair, will check it again after I put in the new springs and bushings. Thanks

My 68 was like that, a little investigation revealed the shackles were tweaked- I blame it on the 400hp V8 and excessive clutch dumping.
