Radiator? Where do I get one? Empty Radiator? Where do I get one?

Post by Casimier Mon May 09, 2011 1:00 pm

Okay...I need a radiator. Mine is leaking and spraying.
I've been pricing aluminum aftermarket radiators on line...they are expensive!
Also, I've got a '66 E100 pickup with a 300 cu. in. engine. This means I have a radiator with a 17 1/2" width x 20" height fin area and top and bottom
    tubes on the passenger side.
The aluminum radiators on ebay that they say fit the van are much smaller, 15 1/2" x 16 1/2".
Also, I'd like to go with A/C one day....huh another dream.
Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

I ended up getting mine re-cored last August. At the time I thought it was pricey like jrinaman mentioned. Now that I look back, it was money well spent!

Is the Ford Falcon radiator the same as the Econoline?

    Hey Guys
Thanks for getting back to me.
So I sit here with no radiator but I see it as an opportunity.
I will eventually put in the AC.
Do I recore with 4 rows of copper and make it a hi output? $400
Do I get an all aluminum 17"x20" 4 row? $300
Either or decision is the right one.
Unless of course I can find a used one that does not leak for $100 then go for another radiator later when I put the AC in.

    Jim,

I have one that I am replacing with an aluminum one, it doesn't leak but it is very rusty and fragile looking but I wouldn't trust it without getting it re-cored.

No the falcon radiator is not the same, it will fit in the doghouse and the hoses match up but the brackets don't line up. it's an easy fab job away from saving you alot of money. My econo has a falcon radiator I pulled from a junkyard for $65.

I believe the Falcon radiators are still available in most parts stores. I am going to check tomorrow with Advance and Auto Zone. Might get lucky.

Nope, Falcon radiators are as scarce as Econolines in local parts stores. Oh well. Drop back and punt.

I am using the 67-68 v-8 mustang radiator. All you have to do is swap the mounting brackets. Take the left one and put it on the right and take the right one and put it on the left side. You will have to heat up the solder with a torch should come off easily.

I bought a Modine radiator (copper/brass) a few years ago for my GTX, and had the top & bottom tanks grafted on. You can't tell the dirrence, except the new rad looks new, and keep the engine temp where it should be.
Maybe try getting the right size and grafting your van tanks on...just a thought. Smile

240 with a 3 row is marginal, shroud helps emensly,, bigger engine, a 4 row is strongly suggested!! ditch the four bladed fan if you haven't already. Been advising for quite a while now that the replacements on Ebay, both aluminum and copper Mustang units are shorter in height from the start which means a LOT less surface area, not including all of also loss of depth in surface air. The stock 240/300 fan height does not pull from the lower 6"'s, but with a shroud it will work much better than a shorter radiator. Just had a custom high effeciency 4 row copper made,, backing my play...

I bought an Aluminum one off of eBay for my '67 for $160 similar to the one below. The brackets were not quite right but I resolved that with $12 at the hardware store using 2 1/2" 5/16 bolts, speed nuts, and a 12" stick of aluminum tube as a spacer. I upgraded to a 6 blade Hayden fan for another $25 and all seems to be running great with a new 240/C4 setup.

I was at a car show yesterday and was looking at a 1965 Mustang and I swear the radiator looks just like my Econo radiator. It was a V-8 so the bottom outlet was on the wrong side. I went online to Auto Zone and Advance and checked for a 1965 Mustang with 6 cylinder and they show it for 154.00. The lower outlet is on the drivers side where it needs to be and the dimensions look to be very close. The mounting brackets are the problem. They are reversed so spacers will need to be used to install it. I will get back to you all about the test fit.
