A108 gauge voltage regulator Empty A108 gauge voltage regulator

Post by Dragsterbus Fri May 06, 2011 3:39 pm

Hi everyone, Just getting my A108 ready for the road , passed it's MOT and it's registration number arrived today (got '108 in the number too !) BUT my fuel gauge and temp gauge have both gone off the top (Full and HOT !) they were both working fine (new sender unit etc) A friend of mine says there is a voltage regulator for the gauges that takes it down to around 5 volts , my problem is i can't find the pesky thing ! it's not behind the guage cluster, Anyone know where it lives ?
    Thanks for any help

Thanks for that , I read that someones '65 has the regulator built into the fuel guage , i'll check mine tomorrow and will probably make a new 5 volt external one,
    Thanks for your help

    Thanks for the help

Check out my pics at the bottom of the page.
Don't go opening the fuel gauge if you can help it. Just cut the 12V connection off the fuel gauge, and feed the centre terminal with 5V from a solid state device, can also be used to power your oil & temp gauges.

LMK if you need an easy diagram to assemble one - 1 x 7805 voltage regulator, 1 x 5-100 mF electrolytic capacitor, heat sink and some wire. Took me about 10 minutes to build once I had the parts.

Hi Kiwimopar , i had the guage apart today , and it now works (not for long i know !) , Yep thats how i was going to do it , just got to wait for a couple of days for the bits to arrive ,
I did prefer the look of the fuel guage reading full though ha ha, it's back on empty now which isn't so good !
    Thanks for the help
    Cheers

heres some part numbers for the external limiters:
NAPA has the Echlin brand, part number "IR9" for $43.00
Pep Boys has the Borg Warner R-307 unit for $35.00
Duralast Wells at auto zone: $38.00 Pn: IRV307

there's some other info in this thread.

The voltage regulator on the A100 gauges is inside the gauge itself. On the Mopar cars it was an external part. For my gauges, I took a cigarette lighter universal power adapter, put it to 5v and wired it into a different inlet on the fuel gauge to bypass the voltage regulator. This is just a temporary fix until I get an external voltage regulator, but it works great Very Happy
