I have just acquired a 1977 Dodge Van for engine and tranny for my GF's Van. Does anyone know if the rear axle would swap out OK, width, etc.? This Van has only 40K on it and we need a V-8 in her's and since we are at it, thought the rear end would work too? Her 67 A-100 just does not have the HP for hauling all of our campin gear. It only has a small in line six at present. Thanks guys!

the '77 engine and tranny in a '67 id leave the a100 rearend there there pretty much bullit proof . the fender tag has the gear ratio stamped on it if you cant find the tag on the rearend. most were 3:55 . you will have to measure the tranny off the '77 make sure its not too long, the hardest part will be makeing a bracket for the tranny and have a good driveshaft shop modify your two driveshafts [make one good one from two]this will eliminate the obsolite ball & trunion . i wouldnt go any shorter than 12 inches. save the v8 motor mounts you cant use the slant 6 motor mounts on the v8

a's came with one of the best rear diffs in the buisness in an 8 3/4. there were 3 versions, 741- 742 - 489. the very best being the 489 case but all three are stout pieces. look on the side of the differential case by the pinion for a casting number. the last 3 numbers tell what you have. 6 cyl van most likely the 741 but the axles and housing is the same for all three "punkins". if you can find a 489 case it will take a big block and slicks with great traction to break it. the ratio could be either 3:55 or 3:91

It would be best if you could find an A-100 automatic Rollie rather than using the B-van transmission. Yes it would go in and you could use the bracket from the 77, but the driveshaft would just be way too short. If the van was an A-108, it wouldn't be that big of deal.

The rear out of the 77 won't work....way too wide, plus the 8-3/4 in your A is better.

BTW, is the 77 a shorty? How's the body?

I have an extra TOP MOUNT, SB Mopar V-8, short tail, A-100 727 if you are looking for one??? Very Happy
...and I would never swap out that bullet proof 8 3/4 for an 8 1/4 either!
