2nd Gen brake question Empty 2nd Gen brake question

Post by VANagain Sun Jan 24, 2010 10:18 am

I'm upgrading the "single" master cylinder in my 1st Gen to a "dual" from a 2nd Gen. I want to know which of the lines coming out of the master cylinder goes to the front brakes. I'm assuming it is the front one, because it has bigger threads.

Do your front brakes use a bigger steel line too? All mine were 3/16" at the wheels so I'm just going to run that size line all the way.

VANagain these are some shots of my 68 parts van. The front brakes are fed from the rear reservoir on the master cyl. The two small lines leaving the junction block go to each of the front wheels and the larger line goes to the rear of the van. The junction block must be partitioned in the center because it's fed from each end by the two reservoirs of the master cyl.

That brake warning switch won't let you hook up the master cylinder wrong,,,,,,,

Thanks for the speedy response! I'm going to skip the junction block. Never had a brake light before on, don't need one now, I guess. I assume there is no pressure regulation going on in this junction block, it just watches for an imbalance from a leak.

2nd Gen brake question Empty 1st Gen adapter

Post by VANagain Sun Jan 31, 2010 1:21 am

Now I've got a question for you 1st Gen owners. Which way does the brass adapter go on the front brakes? Does the flexline connect above or below the hollow banjo bolt? My shop manual seems to show it above, but it seems odd to have the line going up that way.

But, notice that my new brake lines have an elongated metal connector on that end, which makes it stick out further. I had hoped this meant I could leave out the brass adapter and just screw the flex line directly into the wheel cylinder. But I couldn't get it to screw into it, even though the threads looked the same. Have you guys ran into this? How did you handle it?

    Thanks,

Where did you get that weird brake hose,,,,Carquest? Those threads are plain old American, both the same, and use a copper washer to seal them,so they require a flat shoulder on them. And the hose goes up so when you turn, the hose goes above the spring, otherwise it hits the shock, sway bar and spring. You ought to just go to steel braided hoses,,,,My Buddy Scott, in Texas, went to a place in Clairemont, Cal, and bought some. I am sure he would be glad to give you directions on how to get there........

That's OK Scott, I have those numbers,,,,,,but the cool part was, you come from Texas to do some work in Los Angeles and you end up walking into a San Diego store and picking up those brake hoses and fittings,,,,,
