Re: rebuilding a 727 transmission
I bought a book off ebay "torqueflite a-727 transmission handbook" by munroe. I read through some of it before I lost interest. (really dry reading) I was given the name of a guy here in michigan that does them and he wants $300. to go through it, more if I want a shift kit.

Re: rebuilding a 727 transmission
i'v been around the dodge camp for 30 years and i still don't like doing transmissions. i have done a few 727's and 904's and a couple in my caravans and my best advice i could give is drop it off to a shop that specalizes in transmissions and let them do it for you, if you havent done more than 10 yourself. a good guy can do one in about 3 hours if its sitting on the bench and they all hate taking them out and putting them back in. the overhaul is the easy part.
shift kits go into the valve body only and you could do that yourself after its back in and running. remember the shops only give warranties if it is stock so do the shift kit after you know it works right in stock form, then upgrade.

Re: rebuilding a 727 transmission
That was my feeling when I heard $300. to go through it, pay the man and save the headache for something else.

Re: rebuilding a 727 transmission
well im taking a small block 727 short tail shaft and putting the internals into my big block 727 to make it a short tail shaft. i can use the long tail shaft but then my drive safe is about 4 inchs. i just rebuild my first transmission about a month ago and want to learn more.

Re: rebuilding a 727 transmission
I give you a lot of credit! To most of us automatic transmissions are taboo! I am interested on how everything works out, I have several small block 727s but there all mated to new prosess transfer (4x4). I would like to put a slant 6 727 ( 70's pickup) tail shaft on a small block 727 for a steet rod truck Im building. I want to swap the slant six in it out for a 360.69 a 100 wrote:well im taking a small block 727 short tail shaft and putting the internals into my big block 727 to make it a short tail shaft. i can use the long tail shaft but then my drive safe is about 4 inchs. i just rebuild my first transmission about a month ago and want to learn more.

Re: rebuilding a 727 transmission
the internals of the 727 trans are interchangeable from a /6 case to a small block to a big block case as long as you use only 727 parts. the older valve bodies are a little different inside but i can't remember what the difference is. they still bolt up and look the same but its got something to do with governer line pressure ( down shift ).
4x4 cases use a different extension housing but the internals from the rear bearing retainer forward are the same. it's when you get into lockup torque converters that the inside stuff changes so if your 4x4 was a lock up your out of luck.
and no you won't save a penny using a lock up trans in an a-series cause you will never see the benefits.
want a killer 727, just add;
3000 stall ati converter
b/m shift kit
all new discs and plates
all new clutch springs
10,000 lb cooler
finned alluminum pan
= 1 bullet proof trans you can beat on all day and nite.

Re: rebuilding a 727 transmission
Wow ok how can I tell the difrence between a lock up non lock up? I have 3 or four to pick from. Its not going in a van, 41 IH yah little off topic...lets really go off the wall IH V8s in the 60's-70's used 727 automatics, look like a B.B. mopar. Is the bellhousing bolt pattern on the 304,345,391 the same as the B.B. mopar familly? I love old cornbinders but dont know a whole lot about them.

Re: rebuilding a 727 transmission
well if your rebuilding the trans when you take the valve body off there is a tube that goes across the back of the valve body a non lock up does not have the tube, other then that i dont know how to tell lock up vs non lock up

Re: rebuilding a 727 transmission
amc's used 727 also, but i did not know about the binder family of vehicles using them.
most lock up transmissions used a hollow input shaft to deliver fluid to the clutch in the torque, from what limited knowledge i know of these trannys. again i am no expert on them.
started using them mid 70's in all types of vehicles from aspens with /6's to trucks with big blocks.

Re: rebuilding a 727 transmission
ok i looked into it a little more and the lock up transmission on the small splined shaft inside the converter did not spline the shaft at the front of it there is about 5/8 of the shaft that is not splined where as a non lock up trans splined it right to the end of the shaft with a small beval in on the end

Re: rebuilding a 727 transmission
the transmission is all back together awaiting the converter in the mail. i have to say if your rebuilding the transmission yourself and buying a kit to do it the b&m kit is the way to go i was not very found of the tci rebuild kit now lets hope it works the way it says it should

Re: rebuilding a 727 transmission
Ive heard speed shop owners grumble and cuss about tci so your not alone. Think I'm just going to take two trannys down to a good shop I know of and tell him have fun!

the b&m kit if you have some knowalge give you a break down sheet that makes it super easy to do, they go right down to every nut and bolt

Re: rebuilding a 727 transmission
Congrats... you might even score some side work with transmissions since you have the van for advertising.
