8" rear wheel backspacing Empty 8" rear wheel backspacing

Post by Guest Tue Sep 15, 2009 3:24 pm

    Hello-

Can anyone tell me what the backspacing on a basic 8" steelie wheel needs to be to allow me to shove a 275/60-15 up in the rear wheel well of my pickup. It's got the stock leaf springs in the rear.

    Thanks

Should be 4 1/2" , thats what I have on my Cragars with BFG's 295 50 15s. You might have to add lift blocks, you might rub the top of the wheel opening. I had a set of Firestone reverse rims with 275 60 15's on a 64 a100 pickup. 1" blocks aught to get the job done, Ive allways used 2" blocks. Just gives it such an agressive rake, I use 14's up front.

i'm running a 68 stock spring 8 3/4 config. 15 by 8 wheel vintiques series 14 w/moon caps 4 1/2 backspace with a 255 70 15. standing back it fills the wheel opening nicely without looking "over stuffed." it still has a somewhat meaty look butl leaves plenty of clearance all around. now if you really want a nice look, as a test fit with a buddys wheel we had a 15 by 10 torque thrust on my A100 with i believe it was 3 3/4 backspace.

Benwah- what's your front wheel/tire combo? Is there photos of your rig on the website somewhere?
Turbokwagon89- The 15X10 Toque Thrust is 3.77, do you remember what tire was on it when you test fit it? The 255/70 is gonna be too tall for my tastes I think.
Mine's got 235.75-15's on it right now. Super tall and skinny! I think it equates to a 29" diameter.

Unfortunately I cant give a recommended tire size on the 15 10’s, when we tried it was just a dry test fit using a jack stand under the axle to simulate a weight on wheels condition and used a tire less wheel so we could see what type of clearance we had. My concern was it would be too close to the spring, as it turned out it only left me with roughly ¾ inch on the body side (to close for my taste.) but still had room to play with on the spring side… a little more backspace to pull the rim more inboard and it becomes feasible using a tire with very little sidewall bulge.

Some pics on members showcase, Benwah's a100s, Still have dial-up so this dinosaur takes forever to post pics. The front wheels and tires Cragar I believe 4 1/2" backspace, BFG tires 215 60 14. no rubbing plenty of room all around. Its a lot lower now and my shop floor jack wont fit under it, my only gripe well I cant fit under the van either without van jacked up- too many happy meals Razz

Took me awhile but I finally found them. Nice rigs, Benwah. I think that may be a little too much rake for me. I'm thinking somewhere between your stance and level. Split the difference Very Happy I've decided to stop being lazy and yank a rear wheel and get down there and actually do some measuring. It's definitely be somewhere between 3.75" and 4.5". Then I'll call Stockton Wheels, see if they have anymore first hand knowledge of the A100's and have them make me some smoothies with baby moons or spider-caps maybe. A pair of 8X15" for the rear and a pair of 6X15" for up front. I'll post some pics after I get her sorted out.
Thanks for all your help guys!

Ok my new friends- let me repay you for your help. I did some measuring of the rear wheel well and here's what I found. For the rear wheel only. On my 1965 bone stock A100 pickup, the back spacing from the front face of the drum to the closest point on the rear leaf-springs is 5-3/4". The front spacing from the front surface of the drum to the furthest point out of the fender measured at the top of the arch of the wheel well is 6-1/4". This measurement was also taken from the inside point of the lip. So, if my math and understanding of this is correct, a BF Goodrich Radial T/A 275/60-15 which measures a diameter of 28" and a section width of 11" measured on a 8" (this is according to BF Goodrich's specs on the tire) Pete Paulsen steel rim with a back space of 4" would leave me with 1/4" of room between the springs and the tire wall rubbing. Which isn't a whole lot if you add in tire growth at speed. So I reckon another 1/4" off the backspacing will give me room enough on the backside of the tire and at 5-3/4" (front spacing + 1/2 the section width) on the front side will clear the inside of the fender with a 1/2" to spare. I think...
Whew! Ok you can wake up now and return to what you were doing before this rant.
