Post by Guest Fri Sep 04, 2009 5:49 pm

ARGH, my shifter always made a screeching noise when shifting and now it's getting really bad and loud.
I've almost lost my hearing today.
I've tried squirting some turbine oil on the end but to no avail.

    It's making me crazeeeeeeeee! bounce

It could be the rods rubbing under the floor,,,,,, you can disconnect the rods at the bottom of the steering column and see if the noise is still there,,,

It most likely is the rods rubbing in the holes in the frame. They should have nylon inserts from the factory but are gone by now. You can use PVC pipe to make new inserts and quiet things right down.

This is how I fix Chevy shift rods when they rub the guides. I use that plastic insulation wrap,,,,,,

check out and see if its rubbing at the top column brace that holds the column directly to the dash. it has two carriage bolts and loosening them you can move the entire column side to side. i had a crazy noise and it was an easy fix. i dont know what the name of this part is called by my old lady calls it the soap dish tray and i think its funny so i call it the same. i bet thats where its coming from.

Yes, you need a louder stereo, try adding an amp. My rod knock went away immediately after I installed my stereo. But now I have a blue smoke problem.
