I PICKED UP A 64 PANEL AND IT HAS A 12 BOLT TRUCK DIFF. IN IT. Not sure if its original because it has brake hoses coming out of the wheel cylinders. Any help appreciated

Re: 64 12 bolt open
What do you need to know?- the vans did come with 12 bolt rears - my 65 has one.
There are casting dates; see if they end in "3" or "4" - that will give an indication if the rear matches the year of the van.
Two examples of casting Codes:( F 20 3 ), ( J 15 4)
Looking from the back. Check the lower, right, rear side of the pumpkin, right adjacent to the rear cover.

Re: 64 12 bolt open
Ok I will check that but do they have brake hoses from the wheel cylinders ? I thought the hoses were only used when the you need movement. Thanks !

Well, who know what the PO did - Factory was a hard line.
I believe I have the strait lengths if you need them...

Re: 64 12 bolt open
I dont need any lines, thanks. Just wondering why there are rubber hoses going into the wheel cylinders. I ran steel lines to them and it works. The hoses thread into the wheel cylinder. My other 2 vans are 66s and they have the steel line going to the wheel cylinders directly. They are ten bolt diffs though. Are the 12 bolts supposed to be like that? I still have to try and find the ID numbers.

Re: 64 12 bolt open
Not sure of the question - the 12 bolts are hard lined if that is the question.

Re: 64 12 bolt open
For my reference - were the original Delco wheel cylinders still installed? If so - would you share what casting numbers and piston size they are. The numbers are raised cast numbers.
Size maybe 7/8 or 1-1/16
Casting something like this: 5462 965 and 5462 966

Re: 64 12 bolt open
Dont see any wheel cylinder numbers. They are the angled bolt mounts. The housing numbers are B14 on the lower right of pumpkin.

Re: 64 12 bolt open
Well that would be a pretty casting date Feb 1st 1964 - I would tend to believe it is the original rear

Re: 64 12 bolt open
Can I put a 12 bolt truck posi carrier in it ? They require 30 spline axles, so id have to change them also.

Re: 64 12 bolt open
I cannot say - but can offer a few things:
My parts book shows the '64 had 17 spline count - is that what you found? My '65 12 bolt is a 30 spline count & the vans did have an option for posi - So I can only guess it should be a go. Hopefully someone on the board with have experience.

Re: 64 12 bolt open
Yes I have 17 spline. Can only find 30 spline 31 3/8 long CAR axles to fit. They say the outer bearings are different diameters.

Do you have a part number in your book for the 30 spline ? Maybe something would cross. Thanks.

I maybe help you one better I have a spec sheet from my axle - I was going to go the new make route then found the repair bearing to use.
PM me your email address if you want a copy of the sheet.
