Son's new 1964 Econoline Falcon - question on paint code Empty Son's new 1964 Econoline Falcon - question on paint code

My son bought a 1964 Econoline Falcon this weekend.  He'd been on a search for a "surf" type vintage van forever.  Couldn't find an early 70's that wasn't a POS (he likes that body style the best).  I showed him this one, we drove it, and now it's in my driveway!

I had a 1965 when I was his age so it's like going back in time.  Smile

Van is very straight, one small rust piece, rebuilt and strong engine with a C4.  Runs excellent.  Interior is very clean, seats are in great shape - has a small rear bench.  The guy also added some cool stuff like the hand rolled dog house cup holder/organizer.

What is looked like when we brought it home:

All in all a perfect "first old car" for my kid, sound and solid but with enough left to do that he can make it his own.

The previous owner had painted the bumper, light grills, wipers, and mirror holder black so we cleaned all that up - looks much better silver IMO.

Here is a shot of the body ID plate.  There is nothing where the paint code should be.  Can someone decipher this and tell me what color it was originally and the rest of the build details are?

Thanks - this is a great forum.

    Jeff

You have a government van with a non-standard paint, which is why the paint code was blank. Most likely a military transport vehicle.

I fixed your entry at Econoline.org.  See the results here.

The "83" in the second row tells that it was a government vehicle. The "4214" is the special order number. Besides a non-standard paint, it might have other special-order features.

Gray seats is a good clue it was for the Navy. The van was probably gray. Dig deep in the corners and look.

E11SH543436 is an identical twin to your vehicle.

I wonder if there were more vans of the same special order between those serial numbers.

Welcome to V V. Lots of us in California. Not me though.

    Thanks for the info!

The seats are black now, but it's gotta be a Navy van as I saw grey paint inside the door and under the black that had been painted on the floor. I figured it was primer, but now I know. Smile

    Cool!!!

Surfer Van eh? That's what I'm doing, how much did you pay for it?

I'd drop that 2-4 inches all around, throw some new rims with nice white walls. Add the Tiki idols and your done!

Just remember these old vans don't have any crash protection up front, make sure your son keeps a safe driving distance. You might want to upgrade the brakes.

Nice looking van. Definitely better with the black paint gone up front.
