Re: Who ships vans
There are a dozen's in the East/Eastcoast, and all over the country now, seems eBay and CL have spawned a whole industry of small shippers with dualie pickups and 5th wheel trailers taking 2 or 3 cars at a time within 1000 miles. Years ago if you bought a used car, it was in local paper at a local shopping center, always within driving distance, but now with online shopping, people buy cars from one, two or three states away...just look online in the area you want to ship to and from and a half dozen services will show up. I had mine shipped from Erie PA to NJ near NYC for $700, about 700 mile round trip, they all quoted me about one dollar a mile.....for coast to coast there are the 2 or 3 major carriers like Horseless Carraige, and these:

but they get $1500 and up to do that, hope this helps Doni and others....they can all take a van like ours....

yup big company's are everywhere
The main thing about big company's with multicar haulers is they sometimes have 1 week pickup and 1 week delivery..that's not to say that every once in awhile they manage to be in the area of pickup and thus pickup fairly quickly and deliver fairly quickly..
I work with one vehicle at a time..i have 1 and sometimes 2 co-drivers..we stop only for piss breaks, eats,Fuel and when we stop we recheck the load straps, tires, fluids etc.
basically we deliver faster and pickup faster than any of the big company's can because we only have 1 load and not multiple loads that may have to be unloaded in order to get to your car..just being honest :-) we try and allow at least 12 hrs over lap for delivery..to compensate for traffic conditions, weather etc.. plus we have a lower overhead.. thru our contract with Uhaul to use there trailers at a flat rate for the whole month(yup took some haggling back and forth but we did it! ) hehe this helps lower our cargo insurance, by splitting the amount between progressive and Uhaul.
There's alot of other stuff we have in our arsenal to help keep rates as low as possible,,sometimes the terrain will raise the price substantially since going up Mountains/hills constantly will lower our MPG .. The Rocky's is one such example so we have to explain this to the customer when they wonder why the rate is higher than they were expecting..
but there's no hidden fee's that don't go to the carrier like uship,,and believe me there are some if you go thru Uship..ask Lou lol

Re: Who ships vans
Thought i would drop an example rate..this of course is based on the current gas prices between these locations..
If I'm in Portland, OR 97209
and the vehicle pickup location is Elk Grove, CA 95624
and it needs delivered to Palos Park, IL 60464
that's a total miles of around 2651 or so
based on the terrain and fuel cost averaged out between these points to about $2.80 per gallon.. i could do this job for $1865 total..that's with the tolls included.. if the terrain were more flat and there were no toll roads the price would be much lower of course..but that's just an example...
so ummm ...anyone need a vehicle shipped from Elk Grove to Palos Park? um no? ok just checking lol

Re: Who ships vans
I sold a Willys wagon that didn't run and had no brakes or steering column to a guy in Muncie, In..... He got it transported by u-ship from Lake Havasu, Az for less than $800.......Yes, it went on an open 9-car with other pick-ups/deliveries, but the carrier kept in touch with him twice daily during transit and in the 24 hours before picking up......I had several quotes from u-ship carriers to bring me a new car trailer from Mo. for less than a grand......Assess the point-to-point miles of your shipment when comparing cost per mile because it's not your concern where the carrier travels from to make your pickup or return-to-base miles.....Deadhead miles are not your shipment's responsibility!

Re: Who ships vans
I sold an econoline to =Wirepuller(member) Shipper wa typical= He was told the van didnt run /drive when load was contracted. Driver arrives- = didnt have anything to load it!! Luckly- I had a tractor & chains. Driver wasnt paying attention & on another car - crushed the front end of a porsche with a hydraulic ramp!! ouch!! he did arrive & econo was delievered about a month later! unscathed!! Yet all transport companys - no matter what price is paid - will unload the cars & reship them when a full load is going to a specific area!! Therefore = dont get in a hurry to see it in front of your house!! If you want it quickly? you will pay a BIG PRICE!!

Re: Who ships vans
well first and foremost,,this information I'm about to give pertains to me and my company alone..so others may do it differently than i do.
the first thing i do is look at the fuel prices from point A to point B.
Then i Factor in Mountains/Hills(MPG drops when you encounter such things) :-)
Then how many miles will i be in these Mountains and Hills .
Then i factor in the total miles from Point A to Point B.
How much are the tolls gonna be(if any)
Then how many days will it take me and my driver taking our required shift breaks/zzzzz time to get it there.
After all that is figured out i have a general Price range that i can theoretically stay within without losing my shorts..
i bring it down as low as i can..sometimes the price i give is more than what the customer had in mind. I've even had a few ask to see all the gas, toll receipts..needless to say they were very surprised to say the least. lol
getting back to uship a bit..
I figured something else out,,it's not 100% for sure yet tho..but based on the way the brokers(Montway,ALLEGIANT , and a bunch of others ) are bidding, I have come to the conclusion that Uship is not charging them the same booking fee's as they are charging the little guys,,this puts us at an unfair disadvantage..because when we do input a fair price to ship someones vehicle uship tacks on there so called booking fee which in turn raises the price so high that going with a brokers lower price and waiting 2 weeks for delivery starts to sound good to em..if they even ever show up..
I read one of review that claimed that once the broker booked the shipment 1 month went by and no pickup lol that's just wrong..and to beat it all the vehicle was for a kids birthday..and now the vehicle may not show up until 2 days after his birthday at a min..
I'm not slamming all brokers, I've worked with a few that were like crabs..right on the ball..but the ones on uship IMHO aren't worth a flying #%*%$&$
I have a tendency to ramble..sorry , I'll shut up now :-(

Re: Who ships vans
yup, seen that alot,,me i carry a manual 8000lbs winch, had an electric one, but by the time i let it run for bit, stop to let it cool abit, and start again i coulda done had it on the trailer with my manual winch..so i ditch it(one of those china fright ones anyway).
other than the winch we carry an air compressor that is prefilled with 125lbs of air..which hopefully is enough to get any flat tire/s up to a range that the vehicle rolls a little easier.
If we run outa air..hmm well hope there's an electric outlet close by,,don't think my dc inverter would handle the compressor lol..
we also carry a floor jack..some vehicles wheels are buried in gravel, sand, dirt,, so a floor jack and a few pieces of wood help get it outs those things,,again makes hand winching abit easier,,i ain't a string chicken anymore lol and of course various tools, lug wrench(4 way), I've even had to bring along my engine hoist on one job,,because the fella had 2 engines on stands,,but no hoist.
so we bring whatever the job needs..period.
we don't get caught with our pants down..er well there was that time i had to crap real bad,,and jumped in the woods,,and had 2 squirrels watching me from start to finish..buut ..that was the only time..

Thanx rice= im not aware of any stickers -if i ever find??ill buy 20!!!!!!!!!!!I have used uship several times before. Only 1 time I did get screwed -paid for a shipment - then never picked up -never any refund either!! U ship =did issue their part of a refund like 35 bux on a 225.00 shipment!! Shipper was in New Jersey - so I have a real "Stiffy" on the yankee boys now!! Just me & yes =i know everyone is different!! I will only book freight with someone in lower south usa now!! I have seen cars shipped from $800.00 to 5000.00 Yet is it only 1 per truck or?? I do have a man locally that uses a 1 car trailer & goes western usa & into west canada too. not too expensive! to all =just watch the costs & ask questions !!

Re: Who ships vans
yup, I do one ata time,,I have come up with several ways to save myself $ and so i pass those saving onto my clients when ever and where ever i can..mind ya tho..sometime when i think i'm gonna save some $ i usually don't..so i have to be careful and not go overboard with how low i can go.
Oh thought i would show this too..lol
not sure anyone on here has ever seen the carriers side of the bidding before so this is the status of the surf on uship and it's jacked up price.
Offer Price
$1,488.00 <----- This is the current bid price
Total bid as seen by the customer (includes uShip Fee)
Net amount after uShip Fee: $1,154.81 <----- This is the amount the carrier gets after uship takes there cut
I know what your thinking wait the amount actually went down!! well no it didn't..
if i were to goto a listing and type $1,154.81 as the amount i would do this load for..uship would show the customer $1,488 as the total amount to ship the vehicle.. yup tis true..

Re: Who ships vans
I'm 35 years in trucking with five of those as an owner operator......I'm hyper-sensitive to the kinds of double-speak and misleading terminology that bids for transport services generally involve......When you quote a vehicle haul, all the shipper should hafta be concerned with is HIS POINT-TO-POINT COST of having you haul his vehicle and whether his vehicle will travel straight-through on your trailer without delay.... He should also be concerned that his shipment will arrive in a timely manner in the same condition it was shipped, that you are properly licensed and insured for commercial transport, and verifiable, in case you disappear...... I realize that YOUR concern is for TOTAL miles dedicated to the shipment, the in-transit fuel costs, and the terrain.....Hauling single vehicle loads raises the costs versus hauling three, but does provide value to the customer.....From what I can see here, you seem to be honest, but I'd check very carefully before contracting for a service that costs several thousand dollars........
I'm curious--- When someone runs up a $2500 transport bill for a $700 vehicle, is "getting paid" a concern?

Re: Who ships vans
There is a REAL opportunity here for a straight-up honest carrier to become the go-to guy for auto transport.....All it takes is a few positive references (and no negative ones)....
I'm on multiple message boards, though and (so far) no auto carrier has built this kind of trust...

Re: Who ships vans
yup a person's reputation says alot about em..I've looked at the so called feedback of the Brokers on uship,,and altho they praise themselves as being this #1 transporter bla bla bla..the feedback people leave them says otherwise.
getting paid to deliver a $700 vehicle..and getting paid..you bet..
makes no difference what kind of vehicle it is too me, nor it's value.. the value of the vehicle is more the concern of the cargo insurance co.
My only concerns are the vehicle weight, wheelbase,,and if it has stuff hanging off of it that is gonna need tied down, strapped down, or yanked off before it falls off.
getting it securely strapped to the trailer, making sure the safety straps are attached,All my lighting are functional(including trailer lights),as well as the trailer brakes(not as easy to check trailers with hydraulic braking tho until you come to a stop and feel or not feel the drag from behind the van)
hmm did i leave anything out?,,or leave anyone behind?
Oh and the destination is correct..i had one guy give me the wrong damn state..i was in the state he had on the listing, trying to find a friggin street address that didn't exist in that state..very frustrating day that one was..that was before i finally broke down and got a gps..if the gps can't find it,,there's probably a good reason why lol
oh and here recently, make sure you have no extra baggage,,came out of walmart once..was about to take off, looked out me drivers side mirror and saw a leg hanging over the trailer,,drunk fell asleep on the trailer lol or crashed into it and then fell on it,,either way he was out like a light..had to call the popo to get him up..i mean i coulda just rolled him off let him sleep it off on the concrete lol what!! ...NO!..of course i would never do that......again hehe i'm joking
dang everyone is so serious these days hehe
