steering box going out help!!!! Empty steering box going out help!!!!

    Post by ramian09 Fri Mar 13, 2015 11:30 am

Hey guys i guess I don't really know what I should do and am looking for some advice. My steering column gets really hard to turn when I turn it and gets stuck/binds up when you are turning back to straight. I took my steering wheel off and it looks like it is something that is in/near the box. I'm not sure if it is the shaft bearing in the box or if it is the actual worm gear. So I guess I'm wondering how you find that out weather I need a new box or just to rebuild the one I have? Any ideas?

I looked at some other posts in relation to this....and the thoughts were to tight on that adjustment bolt to tighten up the steering box slop and also no lube or dried up lube causing binding problems. Maybe try backing that bolt out 1/16" of a turn and or pull it and clean and fill back up with fresh grease.

My opinion is STOP driving until its fixed. From past experience it will seize up or the wheel will turn with no steering. Get it rebuilt or find a better one. There little balls in the box breaking. Been posted a few re-builders on the left coast.

Thanks for the ideas you guys I am definitely not driving her. Do you know where I can get them rebuilt and if so do you know if they are replacing bearings or just degreasing and resealing them. Thanks again guys.

Give pro steering in Oregon a call. I sent my steering box to them and they rebuilt it and shipped it back. I think it was around $200 to rebuild it plus the shipping back and forth from Chicago. Good Luck!
