    Engine stall Empty Engine stall

    Post by K-Noods68 Tue Dec 02, 2014 10:55 pm

My '68 Chevy has been displaying the typical cold start characteristics. I let it warm up for a little bit and she's good to go. Last night and today she started sputtering and cutting out when I first take off and when I press the clutch in when coming to a stop light, corner, etc.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has this problem?

    Maybe junk gas?

Is your gas gauge lying to you and you are running out of gas,,,,,,when it dies, look down inside the carburetor,,,,see if it smells from gas or you see some down in it when you step down on the gas pedal,,,,,,make sure the choke is actually opening all the way,,,,,,,

I pull the choke out all the way, and the engine idles high. I gradually cut the choke, and it throttles down. Typical I guess. I just put $20 worth of gas in it prior to last night, and I've only driven about 15-20 miles since then. Just from my house to school and back which is about 8 miles each way. I keep gas in it regularly, since I'm working out the issues with my gauge. When I cruise from 1st through 3rd, and 3rd to 2nd, there is no issue. It's just when I first start rolling, take a corner, or slow up for stoplights.

The next time it does it, I'll pop the lid and check out the carb and see what I can see.

What do you have the idle speed set at about? Even a minor vacuum leak might cause that.

Sometimes there can be crud in the fuel, from rusty scale inside the tank, and/or deteriorating fuel hoses. All rubber hoses should be replaced, do not forget the hose back at the tank! There could be a clog at the fuel sender at the pickup. Have you dropped the tank and looked inside? What are the condition of the fuel hoses? If the hoses are worn out and deteriorated, that hose by the tank could be leaking and sucking in air.

Digz, I'm not sure what my idle speed is set at.

Kooky, I'll crawl under and give it a looksee when I test my fuel gauge/sending unit.

    Thanks for the knowledge!

Here is a useful article on how to test and repair the fuel gauge system, its for a chevelle, but its the same thing in our vans:

    Thanks a ton!

Now, my next question would be, can I use a Chevelle sending unit?

Yeah was a dumb question on my part on the idle, Just wondering if you step it up a little if the stalling goes away. I usually set that stuff by ear, but if it seems low it might not hurt to bump it a bit.

No, they do not interchange The bends in the internal pickup tube are different. But the technique to troubleshoot is the same. 67-70 GM vans used 0-90 ohm, just like other GM vehicles of the same years.

Also check for a vacuum leak. Check your carb to manifold bolts, and the bolts on the the carb itself.
