69 steering column bearing? Empty 69 steering column bearing?

Post by Jeremy Wynn Mon Jul 28, 2014 9:53 pm

Hello, took my column apart to fix the turn signals and found the upper bearing is shot. I ordered the signal cam from Napa and it did not come with the bearing. Anyone have a part number or know of a source to get a bearing? I can't seem to find much, everything seems to be listed for 67-72 chevy truck, anyone know if it's the same?

    Thanks in Advance

I would think that gm would use the same bearing
in any gm car or truck that is not a tilt and is made
the same year, so research part for a 69 chevy truck
they are more popular and therefore more parts
are made for them than our vans. hope this helps

69 g10 is my van... everything I find is for trucks. from what I can tell the bearing is the same on non tilt columns on alot of different models. I will probably take the bearing down to NAPA and see if they can help.... I also have a Bearing place that can usually match up any bearing but not sure about this column bearing.

Yep Thats it, 1 ball is missing in the bearing it looks like. Napa no help, bearing place no help.... I really didn't notice a bad wobble in the steering wheel so I may just repack it with grease and leave it.... I just hate to have something apart and see something and not fix it properly.....

    Thanks
I will be needing other parts I'm sure... in fact the automatic gear selector on the column is missing. and the outside door lock, not sure if any of the guts are missing for the door lock as I have not pulled the door panel off yet.

Like in Doni's picture, the bearing comes with a new turn signal switch already installed, not sure if you can get it separate.  There are several threads here on replacing the switch and fixing housing play if the welds below the bearing are cracked which is probably the case if the bearing is destroyed and there is movement at the top of the column, hey, 50 years and 100K+ miles of potholes will do this.....search away...as a temporary fix for the play and worn bearing, simply put a nice tight 4-inch hose clamp around the column over the slot between the upper and lower haves, this will hold the top half with the switch centered on the column and make it driveable until you can fix it right.

My van is a 2nd gen 69 it's not one piece, the first generation vans have the turn signal cams and bearing all 1 part... My bearing isn't that bad so I am going to repack with grease and let it be for a while.
