Wheel Stud Dilemma Empty Wheel Stud Dilemma

    Post by busman78 Thu Jul 24, 2014 10:15 am

67 A108, the front studs were pressed out, purchased Moser 8368 1/2-20 .625 knurl studs which can be pressed in with my thumb. Too loose to run the way they are, so would .625 knurl studs from ARP or Dorman be a tighter fit? Ideas as to a safe fix besides replacing the hubs would be appreciated.

,,,,,,did you forget to grind the swedging off the end and end up ripping out all the serrations in the hub?

if the old ones are now loose,,they wrecked the hubs,,,,,,when they put in the studs, they swedge the studs to hold the drum on,,,,,that swells the end of the studs,,,,,so they end up bigger than the hole on the hub that they just came through,,,,,you got to grind it smaller to pass back out and not rip out the serrations that are now in the hub,,,,,,I would not put loose studs in,,,,they will spin when you try and get the lug nut off,,,,,,maybe a Dodge guy can tell you if there is an oversize repair stud available,,,,,I guess you could put a big bolt in there and take the hub and drum off each time to get the wheel off,,,,,,,,

ok -if no oversize studs are avail?? consider bolting a wheel on TIGHT!! & spot weld the stud on the back in a couple places.

Yeah, I was going to suggest welding them in the back too. It is definitely not ideal, but would get you by until you could get things fixed proper. We had to do this on an old Dart for a summer.
Sounds like you have a better plan now anyway!

Not thrilled about welding, been researching Dorman (not thrilled about Dorman either) but they have 1/2-20 x 1-21/32" with a .630 knurl, that would be .0025 on the radius, might make for good squeeze.

You could weld inside the holes. Just three small spot welds in a triangle pattern. Then the studs will fit tight and be removable.

I picked up some slightly oversize studs from Oreilly's They are 1/2-20 with a .641 knurl and 1 9/16ths long. Just that little bit extra knurl for a good tight press in fit. Part number Dorman 610-085
