Front wheel hub / stud help Empty Front wheel hub / stud help

Post by EcoPU Wed Jan 22, 2014 5:09 pm

I'm trying to redo the brakes on the truck (64). I bought new drums and studs. I took the new drums with the old drums to a machine shop to have the hubs transferred over and studs installed. The machine shop said they thought one of the hubs might be bad. I made a video to show what is going on with it. I also took a picture of the studs that were in there vs the studs I bought. Does anyone have a part number for the proper studs?

    thanks

You definitely need a new hub. The outer race has spun in the hub and that can't be fixed. Definitely don't want to try and weld it or anything like that. I have seen some "knurl" the hub to make a tighter fit but yours is was past that. On the studs. The factory studs are swedged to hold the drums on. When they are pressed out this swedged part needs to be cut away before they are pressed. If they are pressed out without this then they will enlarge the hole and the replacement studs will be too loose in the hole. Replacement studs are made to fit more than one application so they may not match the originals exactly.

Thinking it's going to be really hard to find a new wheel hub.

I've read that you can  peen around the hub then use loctite 660, 680, 640 or 609 to secure the race to the hub.

    or

machine out the bore, weld in a sleeve and bore it back out to spec

The peening you describe is the same as knurling that I mentioned. Same thing, different name. Your hub is way beyond that. I wouldn't weld on the hub races for anything. It shouldn't be too hard to find a hub. I've seen them on ebay from time to time. You might try Tim at Econousaparts. He has some on occasion.

    Hope this helps,

Vic, AKA Old Skool likes to keep his hubs for his disc brake kits but you might get him to sell you one. He likes helping people get old Econolines back on the road.

I have several parts trucks here I can pull a hub or 2 off of. Do you need both of them?
