1961 econo van the work begins

I had some time today to strip and sand the front doors and a bit of work on the nose.
Im not sure what a couple of the holes are from but there must have been four different mirrors on this van!! 13 holes in each side some as big as a dime (one on each side) the rest just screw holes.

Hey guys, Im still alive lol, its just too hot to work on the van, but I did get my new legacy plates, one of the first in CA to get em, check this out!!!!







In a few more weeks when it cools down Ill be back at it, really now it just needs a bit more detail on the body work, paint and the engine installed...

Will the boards be mounted on top with a rack or just tucked inside?

Im thinking both Ill put racks on top but also a sling for the inside, its always nice to put them on top, but you cant leave them there in a parking lot.

Balsa rails and nose, Paulownia deck and bottom, Redwood stringer with Puah shell inlays.

That's quite the Fantastic Lifestyle you surfers have out there on the left coast!!! Great looking surfboard!

And the work continues, my air compressor died so I was out of action for a bit, but here are the latest pics the body is pretty much done, ill remove the front window and seats soon so I can sand and primer the door jambs dash etc.

I just started following this thread!!! Fish- holy moly!!!! My wife was poking me for taking my time and I'm only doing 1/100th what your doing. I bow down!!!! You add awesome keep it up! These south swells have to be keeping you busy too!

Make a tape line on the unfinished quarter,then take a small cut off wheel to make new body line, otherwise looks good compared to before...

Yep that and the top line isn't too good yet, the small details that make a quality finish, take the most time, Ill get her done soon enough, pretty happy with my 700.00 dollar van right about now though..

Well I made it around to the back today, did a little sanding on the primer with 400 also there is a bit more work like the body line, re sanding the whole van with 400 and spray with primer again, but its getting there Im sure hoping it will be done some time this year.














Sorry about the sideways photos I cant seem to correct them no matter how I orient them in my files they come out wrong...

Fish, I hope you don't mind, I just opened those sideways pics with Microsoft Paint and then saved them and reimported them. They look much better right side up! (vanny)

Thanks Vanny! I tried that several times but they wouldn't stay put....

It's a little strange with some pics, when I saved yours to my desktop, it actually saves them the right way.

However, if I then just paste them back into the thread, it would turn them sideways again. So, I found out by accident one day that if I right click on them while they're on my desktop and choose Open With Paint and then save them back to my desktop, then I can put them back in the thread and it doesn't turn them??? Oh well, it works! Vanny

I have had a life changing incident, I am alive but wont ever be able to complete my van, so I have to sell it 3700 gets everything new motor, original motor, brand newclassic rims, straight bumpers everything

Sorry to hear that Matt . You put so much work into that van. Someone will be getting one heck of a deal!!! I hope you're OK. When I saw this post come up I was excited to see what you had done with the van...I wish you the very best and I'm sure someone will snatch that van up quickly.
