Looking to get a HEI for my Sportvan. I know there was a topic on this but couldn't come to a conclusion. I have a Petronix in my Oldsmobile but I couldn't find anything name brand for my Sportvan. I found this one,, anyone use this one? Or recommend a different one?

,,,,an old one out of a 70's GM vehicle with a 6 cylinder is probably more dependable that those hot rod ones,,,,,

When Chevy introduced the HEI distrubutor in the mid to late 70's did they switch over to the peanut plug with the tapered seat at the same time?

I guess my question is, if you install the HEI on a motor with the early style head and the larger gasket type plugs....what plug do you use?

plugs are made for a certain gap and firing voltage,,,,,,,HEI has the small 5/8" peanut plugs and wide gaps,,,,,but putting a HEI distributor in an engine, well basically the cylinder head, using the smaller gap 13/16" plugs wont make much difference in performance,,,,,unless you cant sleep at night worrying that your spark plug gap is 0.010 too small,,,,,the main deal is you don't have to adjust the points every 6000 miles,,,because every .001 that the points close up,,,,it retards the ignition timing 1 degree,,,,,and the points close up a little evevy time you start that engine,,,,,,you will probably end up with an HEI type engine or head if you drive far enough,,,,,

those wide gap plugs are meant for lean times,,,,,catalytic convertors and unleaded gas,,,,we definitely aint running lean on our carburetors,,,,,

Ok thanks...I just swapped out the crummy (1979) integral head that was on my van for an early style head. I already have a factory HEI in it so I got to wondering what plug and gap I should now be running.....

.045 gap on the plug any wider and you will stress the rest of the ignition sys
any less and you won`t be taking advantage of the 50,000 volts that the hei
can produce, so use the original plugs just gap them to .045.

It's the early head with 13/16 plugs....gonna just run the stock plug with a wider gap as suggested.

    Thanks
