Econoline pickup in Georgia Empty Econoline pickup in Georgia

Post by Donn Thu Mar 06, 2014 2:20 pm

So I am trying to buy a Econolone pickup project. Saw one on our site this morning in Amistad Georgia. I called the guy just now and I could not get hardly any info from him.
I was nice and polite asked questions that you would have to know these trucks pretty well to ask. I explained that if I bought the truck I would have to have it shipped and would pay him via PayPal or any other way, money order, postal check etc.

He finally just comes out and says "I know you are from New York and are scamming me"
I guess he knew either by by accent or phone caller id.
Did not even want to talk anymore about the truck unless I came to him with cash then I could ask any questions I wanted. The truck was $2500.
Funny stuff. Good to see there are still some real rednecks out there.
Guess I'll cross Georgia off my list to look for old econolines.

Thats kinda bummer and kinda funny at the same time...I had  an encounter  a few months ago trying to buy a supervan that made me wanna pull my hair out, out of state, too far away and the seller flat out would not cooperate, I wanted that van BAD!..Coincedantly my neighbor vacationed there a few days later and actually put eyes on the van, it was what I wanted but he had apparently already taken a down payment on it and sold it!!!   You just gotta roll with the punches  Basketball

I personally deal only with cash in hand or certified check. I sold a motorcycle to a guy in Cali and had it shipped. The dude was unhappy with the bike and harassed me for 2 months . I am from Georgia but these are strange times we live in and trust is a hard thing to come by. Sorry for your experience but I can see both sides.

This is where if a local member can assist in the check-out and negotiation(if only to show it is not a scam).I know time and distance are a factor.

I would have posted here to see of a member could check it out, but the guy was such a jackass that I would not buy it from him after that conversation.
I don't get why guys would have a problem with non-cash payments. The whole world is doing business electronically now. It's time to join the new real world.
If you are concerned about getting ripped off all you have to do is wait for the money to clear before letting the truck go. I have bought and sold three trucks in the last five years and have paid via PayPal each time and never had a problem. If he was trying to "hide" the money $2500 is not really that much that you are going to pay tax on.
When I bought my pickup it was through an add that was listed here. It was on Craigslist in Oregon.
I saw how clean the body was that I had to have it. I called the guy who was a bit nervous about dealing with me on the other side of the country. I paid him $100 more then he was asking via PayPal that day. The deal went fine.

Just my 2 cents, some people are just way scared of getting scammed.I sell stuff on craigslist and for every real person wanting to buy my item there is 2 scammers try to send payment and they will send a truck to get it. I also like the ease of using paypal , but some people don't think it is safe. Remember the old days, you went to look at something , agreed on a price, paid for it. I wish we could go back to world where your word was your word and a hand shake made a deal

Yes the old days were a lot more secure.. the best part about now is with the internet you have such a large area you can buy from now. In the old days I would never have seen a truck in Oregon . I remember back in the day when I traveled I would always pick up the local car trader so see what was for sale in other states. Then hemmings came along giving us a way to buy in other states. Now I think is so much better. I can open our site sitting in my house in NY and buy a truck in California that afternoon. Pay for it on line , email a transporter and have the entire deal done in a day. Pretty amazing.
I think a lot of older guys, my age 56, are still not comfortable using the internet when having to send money and do deals on line. I get it but once you do it a few times you kind of can see who to deal with and who to avoid. There is still a chance of getting burned, as I have recently got burned on a part, but when buying a bigger $ item, if you are careful you should be pretty safe.

Donn, I totally agree, the internet has opened up so much, the options are endless, I bought my van on ebay across the country, same thing with parts availability, its endless..I even saw an episode of American pickers where they talked about some parts going down in price because of the availability of many more of them on the internet. Of course the risk is always there of getting burned but generally its all good.
