Automatic shifter cable question
I've got a question about the shifter cable (automatic). My short tail transmission has External shift linkage.. But my service manual shows internal shift cables 2 of them .
Here's the question.. When was the shift cable changed to 1 external cable system ??

Re: Automatic shifter cable question
The early years used 2 cables, newer ones used 1, mine being a 69 only has 1 my guess somewhere around 66 was the change. Scottie 8 door could answer that.

Re: Automatic shifter cable question
I found a motor home in a junk yard in Cincinnati today with the auto shifter in it. Also found a rough wrecked A100 pickup 6cyl/3spd.

Re: Automatic shifter cable question
Tim the motor home should have had a steering assist or power steering from the factory.
those allways have some value

I didn't pay attention but the 413 engine and 727 trans are for sale. He said it's low miles and runs but has already been removed

Re: Automatic shifter cable question
the 2 cable systems were primarily in cars. i think it would be rare to see a 2 cable shifter in an a-series. one cable is for park only and the second does the shift pattern. and by no means am i saying they never came configured that way as mother chrysler was hard to figure out at the best of time. of all the ones i have owned and seen i never came across a 2 cable shifter in one. even the sweptline series trucks had 1 cable shifters i believe. i certainly would like to see both ends of the 2 cable setup in a van. seen a bunch in cars already....

65 was the last year for the 2 cable auto, but maybe
a few leftovers were used in early 66's

See, answers like this from the master himself are worth the price of free admission alone! Scottie, whats the deal with the 3 different dash mounts if theres only 2 different shifters. I remember someone(Ter or John, aka RodStRace?) posted the 3 a long time ago but I forget.

Re: Automatic shifter cable question
the 64's used a different 2 cable shifter than
65's and early 66's. resulting in 2 different mounts
in the dash. 65 was the last year the trans were
built with internal cables.
sometime around 67 dodge came along with the
dash pad (wing) to keep your head from hitting
the metal dash, and moved the shifter hole closer
to the dash panel to allow a mount for the wing.
along with this they moved the key, wiper, headlite
switches inward to avoid your knees hitting them
in a crash. hope this helps.

Re: Automatic shifter cable question
My 65 has the 2 cable setup, but the park cable is broken. It doesnt hold the tranny in park. So I have to park on level ground and pull the E Brake. Once I came out of the store and couldn't find my Van! It rolled across the lot til it hit a curb. Thank god it didn't hit anyone or hop the curb!
Anyone know where to find a replacement cable or where to go to get it fixed? And an approximate cost?

Hi, first I qualify - I have no experience with the 2 cable tranny, but I did a search and found this interesting enough to pass along.

Re: Automatic shifter cable question
OK =Guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are 2 manufactures for these cables- all used by marine applications & can be had @ any boat repair place & marine wholesalers!! The black one is a "Morse" brand & there is a "red" one made by teleflex! I personally prefer the teleflex brand-also you can get these in a steel inside cable or a "stainless' which i prefer the last. Teleflex was always easier to use & move also -for me - almost 40 years using this stuff!! Boat yards & salvage places will have yet best to get from your small marine repair guy!!Cheaper 4 ya . u can get them in 1 foot increments .
