Re: automatic shifter location
the hole in the dash is one thing but there is a mounting plate spot welded to the underside of the dash the shifter should actually bolt to.

Re: automatic shifter location
From the the edge of the recess to the center of the bolt holes for the shifter is 2 1/2 inches
Not sure about the later years but the 64 doesn't use any bracket that's welded under the dash. It has 2 screws under the windshield rubber and 2 at the bottom of the dash

Re: automatic shifter location
Dantra the later models were dirrerent mine has the inside spoiler on the dash yours looks to be centered between the speaker grill and the gauge cluster, i guess that mine ends up center between the cluster and the spoiler /face protector in the dash , unless some one else chimes in mine also has a cig lighter the same place the shifter goes. ! i wonder were that goes.

Re: automatic shifter location
my '69 is 7/8" from the l/s to the cluster and 1 5/8" from the edge of the dash pad bracket. The lighter is on top of the dash 2 1/2" OC from the edge of the ashtray and 2 3/4" OC from the edge of the dash, there is a bracket on the bottom side spot welded to the dash. My '67 lghter is in the same place as the one in dan's first pic, centered between the shifter and cluster on the flat edge of the dash by your knee. If you need pics let me know.

Re: automatic shifter location
I can get measurements and a picture of my 68 after it cools off!
As mentioned, the later ones have a hole in the dash and a spot-welded section behind that adds support and that everything is bolted to.

Re: automatic shifter location
Looking at my 64 with the 3 speed, it has the mounting holes for the auto shifter. That'll make easier for me when I do my conversion....sucks that 2of the bolts are under the windshield rubber

Hi there 67a... what's that round hole between your vent & ashtray on top of the dash?
Looks factory for something.

Re: automatic shifter location
kiwi....You probably have the wire under the dash for the lighter. All your need is a small hole saw and an after market lighter from the parts store. I added one to my '68.

Re: automatic shifter location
Possible, I have no idea what was base equipment and what was added.
If you look at the first few pics (1964) you can see the lighter on the lower edge.
The heater controls, ignition and other stuff changed over the years too. There is a thread on that here somewhere.
BTW, if it has an ashtray, it was still a smoker's version, it just required a Zippo (pre-Bic)! Whole different time back then!
Oh, and I would NOT add one in the dash top position. Too easy for the socket to be open and a penny fall in, causing instant short! If you need a "power recepticle" to be PC and current, Tuck it up under the edge so your power cord can reach.

Re: automatic shifter location
Good point Rod... I never use my ashtray for anything other than "drive thru" change. That would suck to have a penny fall in there.

Re: automatic shifter location
DID THEY MAKE THE DASH WITH OUT A ASHTRAY I KINDA THOUGHT 3 SPEED OR AUTOMATIC WOULD HAVE BEEN THE ONLY OPTION THEY WOULD HAVE BACK IN THE DAY ????? UNLESS THEY SCREWED DOWN A DELETE PLATE OVER THE HOLE NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT THERE WERE ALSO RADIO & NO RADIO. I'M GUESSING NO RADIO NO SEAT NO LIGHTER.???

Re: automatic shifter location
again, not sure of this since I haven't researched it but for a fleet vehicle, I'd guess the passenger seat, sun visor(s), radio, and other stuff could easily be not ordered to keep costs down.
