I have a 1973 Econoline Club Wagon Custom And I'm having an issue with the blinkers. I cannot get the horn cover off to get at the blinker components. I would like to know if there is some tool or trick to getting this thing off. It's the horn that has the push ring that is part of it. Also if someone has any know how on the directionals that would be a plus. they don't work at all but the flashers do. Both relays work as well.

disconnect the horn or battery, Push in on the horn and turn it at the same time. Should just pop off.

Re: 1973 E 200 Steering wheel
Like Duane said, push down and turn. They are tight so it may be tricky. Probably have a bad turn signal switch. Similar switch is used on 67's, different plugs. I did find a late model big truck switch that works. Physically it's the same, even the same color wires. The difference is the plugs at the end. I will try to post a photo and part number.

Re: 1973 E 200 Steering wheel
ALL THE GENII's are a bitch!!!!! You REALLY have to get on top of them and lean on them to get the horn cover off. The wheels are IDENTICAL to ours and I use them all the time IF I can find one not cracked. I have even had to break and or cut the horn button off at times. As they are the same, IMO its in the late model horn button and not the wheel. After you get it off you can work the metal lip on the wheel for more clearance when you push it down to take it off.
Regards to the turn signal units,, they are the 8 wire units EXACTCLY like the LATE 8 wire 67's, however longer wires and a different plug end on them. I use them again, all the time for the upgrades in the our Econolines. Here is a wiring schematic to use our plug ends or using two prong trailer plug ends in order to plug them into ours.
The steering wheel is identical, however it has an added horn contact ring under neath it for the 67 to 74 turn assembly horn, other wise, its identical other than painted a different color.

1967 TURN SIGNAL WIRING COLOR CODES
This is the color code for the 1967 to 1974 Econoline emergency light turn signal assembly. The 1967 turn signal unit with three two prong electrical plug ends and the 1968 to 1974 GENII turn signal assembly with the same wiring and wire colors except for using a different single electrical end plug. These wire colors are for either the early 67 seven wire or the late 67 to 74 eight wire turn signal units.
NOTE: Two methods of converting the 1968 to 1974 GENII turn signal assembly to plug into the 1961 to 1967 Econoline OEM the three colored factory two prong electrical connectors (Red, Blue and Black). The first method described below using two prong black electrical connectors, making sure to use the correct end of the two piece connector that you purchase, using one end and not the other end supplied as it needs to match the original early Econoline turn signal electrical plug in pattern. Simply put, it needs to plug into the early Econoline electrical plugs…
The 2nd method simply uses the old turn signal wire loom, complete with its three OEM colored two prong ends. To use this method,, you cut both wire looms off up at the turn signal unit leaving enough wire so that you can connect the two together. I stagger my connections in order to not have them all at one area and not bunched up in one spot.
Using either method, it is important to have the correct color to match the correct prong on the connector paying attention to either a male or a female connector.
BLUE CONNECTOR
Connect GREEN/WHITE stripped wire to MALE end of plug connector.
Connect WHITE/ BLUE stripped wire to FEMALE end of plug connector.
Install large diameter BLUE shrink tubing over plug end to indicate plug color.
RED CONNECTOR
Connect SOLID BLUE wire to MALE end of plug connector.
Connect RED/BLACK stripped wire to FEMALE end of plug connector.
Install large diameter RED shrink tubing over plug end to indicate plug color.
BLACK CONNECTOR
Connect YELLOW/BROWN stripped wire to MALE end of plug connector.
Connect SOLID GREEN wire to FEMALE end of plug connector.
Leave black connector for connection to BLACK dashboard plug connector.
.
DARK BLUE/YELLOW stripped wire is the single male end plugged wire for the horn.
WHITE/RED STRIPPED wire is for the ADDITIONAL flasher unit that operates the EMERGENCY flasher lights. This is another flasher to be installed as the original flasher controls only the turn signal lights and not the EMERGENCY lights. This 2nd flasher needs a CONSTANT FUSED 12 VOLT supplied to one terminal side of the flasher itself, and the WHITE STRIPPED wire to the other terminal.

I live in RI but have a summer house on the Maine coast. I travel through Boston regularly. Just drove through last night on the way back from Maine. What part of Boston? I am going to Hingham then through Boston to Wilmington on Saturday.ztmaximus wrote:Thanks guys. You have been a huge help if your ever in Boston call me out on here.
Every year on the Sunday after Labor Day I have an early Econoline picnic ay my house in RI, usually 12-20 trucks, several Gen II's always show up. It's about 50 miles from downtown Boston.
