Re: First Gen Missing Air Cleaner
Do yourself a big favor and get rid of all that loose hanging insulation, it will catch fire and burn your engine up especially if you run it without the air cleaner, one backfire and your done...happened to me many years ago on a '66. Re-line the cover with modern foil faced heat insulation, many on the market to choose from, try eBay for starters...Get a small 4-inch paper air cleaner from auto store like Pep Boys in the mean time. A stock air cleaner may be hard to come by, I've asked around and no one is willing to part with one. You can search junkyards that have older pickups and vans and probably find something similar that would fit, but the modern small ones that sit on the carb are all you need...

Re: First Gen Missing Air Cleaner
So it's 3 pieces of metal plus a pair of mounting bolts with wing nuts?
-the big round part with the air intake tube
-the oval part bridging to the carb
-the riser from the carb

Re: First Gen Missing Air Cleaner
Ill try to see if it's still there in the Boneyard machine I saw tomorrow. if it is, I'll grab it for you. It was definitely off the engine, but there was a bunch of junk lying in the back.

Re: First Gen Missing Air Cleaner
The 66 van I bought has been intransit until about an hour ago. To make a long story short, the "lost" air cleaner was located and included - quite a nice surprise after seeing the photo of it missing. I've been in a rush to replace it because the motor rebuilder I'm taking the van to tomorrow morning said he'd not include a warranty if I didn't have an air cleaner in place when it's driven away. I was going to resort to buying a small aftermarket assembly if I couldn't find an original in time. (I wish the seller's photo would have shown the fact the doghouse lid has no locking support bracket.)
Thank you G-man and Donivan65 for the photos - it's helped me verifiy I've all the correct pieces of metal (I can deal with my missing paint). And thanks jbass62 and Dawgboy for your info and offers. It's nice to receive excellent and fast help.

Re: First Gen Missing Air Cleaner
The 64's and most '65's just had a chain to hold the doghouse cover open, I'm not sure when they started with the rod in a slot along side the passenger seat with notches to lock it open, I recall my old '66 had this and no chain. Yours may have had the chain set up, its just two holes, one in the cover and one on the side of the doghouse behind the passenger seat side for a bolt to hold the chain. I used flat link chain from a home center and some 1/4-20 bolts, works fine if you don't have the rod set-up. I just run the small 4-inch air cleaner on top of the carb, seems OK, does the job

Re: First Gen Missing Air Cleaner
My 66 had a chain, I put a Econo prop on mine, much better design than the rod
