Flicking through the Shop Manual Supplement, it shows a third mounting bolt to a bracket on the top rear of the starter to the block where the dip stick is attached. Mine's long gone, anyone have a pic of this? I'm sure it could be easily fabricated, is it really needed? I have a 194, assume the 230 was similar?

Re: Rear Starter Support?
GM installed those many years-likely some starter rebuilder may have one - we always just removed them-trash can item.

Re: Rear Starter Support?
No, its a small 'L' bracket close to the tail end ahead of the solenoid that bolts to the top of the starter and to the side of the block, I guess for extra support? if my holes are there and the threads are clean, I may make one up, can't hurt?

Re: Rear Starter Support?
There is a stock bracket for the V8s that bolts to the FRONT of the starter and the block. Typical angle, with a bend in the middle.
As said, most got pitched the first time someone serviced it.

Re: Rear Starter Support?
It looks similar in the manual for the Six, there is a bolt on the side of the block next to the dip stick tube and a threaded hole on the top along side the solenoid connections. There's also a threaded stud with an extra nut like the one in your pic, same starter for 6 or 8? I'm gonna make a bracket from a piece of flat or angle stock, as you said, it will take some stress off the main bolts.RodStRace wrote:There is a stock bracket for the V8s that bolts to the FRONT of the starter and the block. Re: Rear Starter Support?
I will add =Gm put the bracket on the starters to avoid the starter from moving slightly when actuated (torque) esp=if the mounting bolts wernt torqued correctly !!

Re: Rear Starter Support?
I would say if you were running a very high compression motor
this part would be a nice insurance policy to have, if your motor
is a stocker I wouldn`t worry about it. I have had gm products my
whole life and have never had one of those brackets on any starter
on any engine in any vehicle I have ever owned and never had problems
with the bolts breaking. maybe I`m just lucky. m2cw

Re: Rear Starter Support?
You Should have a Support Bracket on the starter.!!!! You are all correct most were tossed the first time the starter was replaced and you have a bigger chance with a hi compression engine and probley will never have a problem with a stock motor... I personally in 32 years of owning many vehicles I have Never broken a starter bolt.(knock on wood) BUT it was put there for a reason from the Factory...The biggest issue is it keeps the starter from flexing around and looseing the starter houseing bolts and mounting bolts also.!!!!! I have a starter bracket on all my vehicles JUST incase cheep insurance I guess.. But on the other hand every car or truck that has been towed in our Shop in the last 26 years with a broken or stripped starter bolt did not have the Factory installed bracket on it... And I wound up on almost all of them putting a fly wheel it them also.!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just my opinion:)

Re: Rear Starter Support?
Try looking into a local small starter / alt rebuilder shop. or large auto parts place in their starter cores or junk yards -core piles.

Re: Rear Starter Support?
Here is one for sale!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/121206699714?item=121206699714&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:X:RTQ:MOTORS:1123&vxp=mtr
My holes don't line up, the one on the starter is about 3/8" farther to the front, the starter must not be original so I made one up from scrap stock. But this one would be nice if your holes line up.
