The gearbox is part of the assembly,it's what gets "rebuilt". Remove steering wheel, unbolt support tray between column and dash, unplug trun signal wire harness and remove turn signal assembly, remove access plate on floor, disconnect shift rods from base of column, slide outer column assembly up and off of the column exposing inner shaft being careful not to lose the bearing in the turn signal housing cup at the top. Remove large nut *AND BOLT*(important) from splined shaft coming out the side of gearbox underneath vehicle and slide off Pitman Arm, remove 3 bolts holding gearbox to frame and take the assembly out.

Tim,,,,, It sounds like he will be indeed sending the column out to be rebuilt and not the gear box. Perhaps a good time to consider doing that also at the same time...

This is Vic, and I rebuild the columns,, there is a LOT to rebuilding them and much more than can be seen without knowing how to do them,,,, LOL...
In regards to pulling it and the steering box, to pull the steering column should take no more than five minutes and to pull the box maybe another half hour. Neither is very difficult to do at all.
After you pull the coloumn the easy way to pull the box is to remove the pitman arm bolt. The pitman arm is slotted for the bolt as a safety feature.  The arm cannot come off as long as the bolt is in that slot.... SO,, remove it, dont bother with the ball joint and leave it attatched to the drag link,,, simple!!!!!!!!!    drop it on the ground,, LOL.....  remove the THREE 7/16th course thread bolts with the 5/8ths head on them and pull the box up and out,, DONE,,  no big deal...
THEN send it out for rebuild,,,,
