    65 PK/UP Spring Special ? Empty 65 PK/UP Spring Special ?

Post by stanyon Tue Sep 24, 2013 1:37 pm

As close as I can come with the VIN. E10TH697057 is that I own a 1965 truck with a 170 engine, built June of 65.
I also have determined that I have a 9 inch rear end with 3.00 gearing and 2-1/2 brake shoes both front and rear. Truck came with the Spring Special exterior trim and chrome front and rear bumpers. Was there a cut off date for the Specials ?
also my drums are garbage, is there a problem with using rear drums off a Ranger P/U ?
The center hole is larger on the Ranger drums, so the drum would be floating on the front, is this a problem ? Thanks for the information.

Can you post the other info from the data tag? There's a code on it that signifys a SS. Can't tell from just the VIN

Your VIN falls in the middle of the Spring Specials, so it is possible.  It was rare for a Special to come with a 9" rear axle, but not impossible.

I have one that I call a Spring Special, because it has a VIN like yours and has the side trim holes and the right paint color.  Unfortunately my doors were replaced and the door tag was lost.

As was pointed out, the door tag has a special character for the Special.  Though Ford messed up a few door tags back in those days.

The truck was originally Poppy Red, Vin tag on drivers door was removed by previous owner(s). I am trying to post pic's here but I am having a problem with my computer knowledge base. Thanks to all for the response.

If it was Poppy red I'd bet it's a SS. Poppy was the default color on SS's. If no color was specified then it was Poppy red. Poppy wasn't offered in the option list. Only on SS's. Of course in the 60's you could get it painted any color you wanted if you were willing to pay for it but I've never seen any Econolines painted in Poppy red except the SS's. Your number is in SS production. The were built in May, June, and July. I'd be pretty sure it's a SS. You could get the 9" if you orderd a ratio that wasn't available in the 7.25 rear. Sometimes you can find a build tag under the wire cover on the passenger floor board. I've mainly seen those on 67's but it may have one under there.

Again thanks to everyone for there input. For now I will accept that the truck is a Spring Special.
Has anyone made templates for the CardBoard interior piece's, or do you start cutting and fitting ?

Ranger brake drums won't fit properly. NAPA has new ones and they aren't that expensive.

If you need interior stuff talk to Fred Carello, He makes everything interior for Econolines. He goes by fmc56 on here. He has all the templates for all panels. Pretty reasonable as well.
