When looking to get a replacement cylinder head, I need to identify whether I have a C5 C6 C7 or C8 head. Where would I find this casting number? The van is a 67 with a 170. Thanks

Your 1967 should have the C7 head. The parts book lists the C9DZ 6049-G as the replacement for 1967.

I'm looking at the truck parts book, so they don't list everything that was installed, but list the replacement part.
What this means is that if you went to a Ford dealer to replace a 1967 head, they would give you a 1969 head.
The 1963 head C3OZ 6049-K is recommended for 1964. (smaller valves)
The 1965 head C5DZ 6049-B is for 1965 and 1966 without T/E.
The 1969 head C9DZ 6049-G is for 1966-1968 with T/E.
The 1969 head C9DZ 6049-F is for 1967-1968 with IMCO.
The valve length was the same from 1964-1970
The head diameter of the valves became larger in 1965, but stayed the same from 1965-1970.
I don't know if there were any other differences that would make a difference. The combustion chamber size might be different, changing the compression ratio, but that is not indicated in the parts book.

'64 & lower hasa sm "dizzy-bottom hole" so must pretty well keep the SCV/LOM feedback system. '65+ = ability to use DSII, other, w/modern components. Most think of hop-up @ carb only. Ignition is the other 1/2 of the equasion in performance (that is pep AND MPGs). Machining or reworking the dizzy can B done but either is a chore. Do not B fooled by DUI's price. The ford is not quality (o ring leaks oil, other probs).
Head: changing carb hole
(℄
of bolt spacing too) size, area volumn, valve size.https://fordsix.com/ams/small-six-specs-144-170-200-250ci.9/

get what U need Mr Peacock?
up-date s ???
The first two digits were the production year, the second two digits were the model.
The first digit (always a letter) was for the decade - C=60's - D=70's - E=80's
The second digit (always a number), was the production year.
For example: C3 is 1963 - C6 is 1966 - D7 is 1977 - E0 is 1980 - E2 is 1982
