66 GMC - need opinions
I'm new to vans. I've been searching for one around the Chicago area for quite a while. This one just popped up but he wants 3k for it. From what I've seen I think its a little high because of all the rust and the side doors don't look aligned. No idea what the inside looks like. It has an inline 6 with a 350 trans in it, runs great, daily driver. What do you guys think?

Re: 66 GMC - need opinions
Looks to be a 66, are sure it's not a powerglide? (powerglide is 2 speed- PRNDL, where TH350 is 3 speed PRND21)
Side door is sprung, could be straightened by gently closing it against a 2x4. Rust is about average. If the roof isn't rusted at the drip rail, and the cab hinge area isn't rusted, offer $2000- only if it is able to be driven home.

Re: 66 GMC - need opinions
I Think the Biggest thing to look for is Body Condition.... the mechanical .. Don't matter much ... cause at 50 years old..... every thing needs to be replaced any way ...

I agree to a point- and that point depends on the buyer's abilities, including the ability to keep a non running project on his property for a length of time. If you have to be able to drive it, it is possible to do some basic bodywork and still drive it at least weekly.
And at 50 years old, even our bodies ain't what they used to be. A solid straight van without a drivetrain is likely to fetch near $3000- especially if you factor in that it most likely will have to be trucked in from the west.

Re: 66 GMC - need opinions
I haven't seen it in person, just going by what he said, so I'm not sure what the transmission is.
The thing that scares me the most is the body. I have no experience on repairing the rot. Plus they don't make patch panels for vans correct? How would one go about fixing the rust?
I really want a no door but this is the next best thing. Not liking those side windows either.

Re: 66 GMC - need opinions
So-
You don't like the bodywork involved, and you really want a no-door?
Pass on it, save up some more money and wait for your van to find you.
I absolutely guar-an-frickin-tee that if you spend your wad on this one, within a month the one you want will pop up and you won't have the money.

It's not that I don't like it, it's that I can't do it myself. And I'm guessing having a shop do it would cost more than the vans worth?
It's not so much a money issue as a lack of vans around here. This is only the 3rd 1st gen I've seen for sale in about 9 months.

Re: 66 GMC - need opinions
I agree with the other guys if you realy want a no door then keep looking. I thought a few were for sale in the past few months, start looking in a few more states. spending $500. to $800.00 to tow a nodoor home on a u-haul trailer and gas is cheaper than the body work if you are not comfortable doing it.

Re: 66 GMC - need opinions
Coast to coast shipping is about $1000, so southwestern vans might be worth your while. Or ones from the Pacific Northwest, that seems to be the hotbed lately.dix wrote:I agree with the other guys if you realy want a no door then keep looking. Re: 66 GMC - need opinions
I think it's in Iowa, but using the 3000$ as a guage. The van jakemedic has for sale for 3500 right now would be a super buy if the mechanical/re-assembly didnt bother you.The body looks to need minimal work. That is if you didnt need an imediate driver.

I saw that one on ebay a few months ago, I think he even had it listed for 2000 and it didn't sell. Only reason I didn't go after it is I don't have indoor storage for it at the moment.

Truer words have never been spoken. But I can attest, the wait to find one in your area can be agonizing.

My guess is the 350 motor isn't stock or a mistake for a 283
