I really enjoy just the everyday run around things that get done with the van. All the thumbs up, and smiles make it fun for sure.

Re: The Surfing Guy's 65
Well, today was the maiden voyage down to the beach with the van for a surf and cruise...
Later Don met me down there
and as luck has it, it was a good thing too. Seems my alternator took a crap on me and would no longer charge. The van would run once it started, but pretty much every time I would kill the engine, I needed his battery charger(s) to help me get started. That's right, chargers...one wasn't enough.
We cruised some more, got some food and headed back to my house. Once there we did some diagnostics and Don will tell the rest of the story...

Like a guardian angel! Glad it all worked out and you made it home without a tow! New alternator in the shopping cart?

Re: The Surfing Guy's 65
Yeah Vanny. I bought a new alternator and a new battery (mine was the original one from when I bought it and it was tired). Then Don came by and re-clocked it. We installed it and everything is running like a top. In fact, now that I have a new battery I was able to hook my stereo up to a terminal on the fuse box with constant power and keep stored memory on the stereo. In other words, I can program radio stations, but more importantly when I turn it off and then back on, I don't lose my spot on the Mp3 order! Ready to cruise again...

I'm hoping you were just taking in the scenery and not broke down! Did Scottie take that pic?

speedometer / odometer cable diagnosis
This weekend I tightened up a few loose ends, so to speak. I found that my lower radiator hose had a few drips of coolant on the end, so I tightened up the clamp, I zip-tied up all of the wiring under the dash (voltage/water temp gauge, stereo/speaker wires, fan switch, etc.), and re-sealed the doghouse gasket/insulation that was coming off.
Other than those minor things, I tried to diagnose my speedo/odometer issue (they do not work). First, I unscrewed the cable and re-seated it to the back of the dash. That did not work. Then, per Don's recommendation, I unscrewed the cable at the transmission and hooked up the drill to the steel cable that is inside. I then had my wife/soulmate check the speedometer and we confirmed that the arm on the speedometer tilted to 50 mph. This tells me that the cable is hooked up ok at the dash and that the cable is not broken. So, I detached the whole cable/adapter at the transmission and checked the plastic gear and it seemed fine. Then I spun the steel cable with my fingers and the plastic gear turned, so I am assuming that the plastic gear is not meshing with the teeth inside the transmission??? Don?
