summit has dual carb, triple or 4 barrel all for around $280.00. 4 barrel is tight in the doghouse. langdons has cast iron headers, clifford has short tube headers $$$, cams are available from several manufacturers. i currently have a comp cams 268. i have cliffords for my 292, .524" lift. deck the head .060 and compression will be 9.6:1. you can go .100 without clearance issues but more prone to cracking. 307 flat tops will also raise compression. recurving distributor helps, v-8 parts fit the hei 6. you can fit 194 valves and lump ports are available for better flow.250 6cyl. upgrades ??? jrinaman,

I am wanting to do the came 292 swap into a first gen, but I'm worried the 3x1 carbs will not fit under the doghouse lid with the increased height of the 292. Have you given any thought to how you will handle this issue?

It's been a real headache getting my 4bbl to fit in the doghouse.

My Edelbrock was about, or less then, 1/2" from the wall. But, since 600cfm was to much, I switched to a Holley 390cfm. But to get it to fit I had to buy a plate from Clifford that rotated the carb. 90 degrees. And since I dropped the engine cross-member an inch for the transmission swap, the Holley linkage fit where the doghouse gets fatter. In hide-site I would definitely stay away from the Offy 4bbl., I don't know about the Clifford 4bbl, or the row of 1bbl carbs.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I'm going to go with the dual single barrel cards. I'm not looking for alot of horse power I just want to bump it up and I like the idea of two carbs( its just cool). So now how about headers I see most that are available still need the manifold heat. I live in N.H. and don't think I will be driving this van in the cold weather ( I didn't bay it in tucsan AR to give it a salt bath in N.H.) Any tips, How inportant is the heated manifold? Has any one done this without the heated part??? And witch headers fit under this doghouse???

You can get a water headed plate to make up for having headers.

    I haven't used one myself, but here's a link..

yes, i have the heat plate too, but its on my to do list. ran fine in 15 degree weather anyway. the only tube headers i know of are cliffords. the long tube headers claim to fit but you tell me what you think of these.250 6cyl. upgrades ??? Van_en14 suprisingly, they only ever brushed a couple speed bumps in the year i have had them. my crossmember is dropped about an inch, and i think the 292 will fit but i can drop it more and extend the tranny hanger if needed. the clifford 4 barrel intake is way to big to fit, the hot set up for the 6's is 2 holley-webbers. you would need to fab an intake to fit for our vans. i have several years worth of projects ahead of me but i do have the 2 carbs and a welder, so someday? the dual and triple 1 barrel intakes are same size as stock, offy 4 barrel is same as stock, but carb is centered so hangs out past intake. if you only needed another 1/4" you could put washers under drivers side mount and lean motor slightly. switching to a throttle cable leaves options for linkage. cheap and easy h.p. is decking the head. if you have intake and exhaust off anyway, your almost there. our motors flow about 400 cfm. the 1 barrels are around 130 and the holley webbers are 190 cfm.

That is exactly what I'm trying to avoid . Sorry that happened to you but that is what this site is about. What are they and someone knows what the right fit is. WHAT IS THE RIGHT HEADER ??? Please help me . If it has to be custom, tell me but I'm not trying to give away $$$. I just want to get it right the first time. I have a long way to go and any help in saving money will go to the next step. By the way had a hard time finding shackels for the 67 van , I found oem parts At donavan spring in derry N.H. Hope this helps someone as it was hard to find anything online. Good luck and good vanning, Can't wait to join you.

OR, find someone who can 'split' the exhaust manifold... that is the only way you retain the factory style carb heat.

These manifolds were done by 'Curt B #5628' at inliners.org... I sent him a PM asking about his work.

Check out his slideshow where he shows step by step how he does these neat manifolds.

I think a good welding/fab shop should be able to do something like this.

TeamThunder offered these up to me the other day since I cracked my factory exhaust manifold. I've since decided to stick with a factory 292 manifold..

Shoot him a PM if your interested..

I just finished this kind of upgrade. Here is what i found. 1. Langdon Stovebolt header is the one to use. 2. I put the offenhauser dual single intake on. (after more reading, its suggested to use one carb. per two Cyl.for best efficiency.)I think mine works very well with just two though. the intake also has previsions for hot water heating. that way it warms up faster and has better throttle response. Also think about an electronic ignition conversion. I'm currently working on that. Hope this helps to shed some light on your plans. there is a lot more options to make high horsepower from the inline six.
