Thanks Don, was just gonna start this post myself after talkin about it today. Really appreciate the help!
I'm going to get in contact with "Skipwhite" and see what they can do for me. Hopefully they will just send me a new canister so I can just pop it in.

Now that I have a member's showcase, guess I will add some pictures!

I am by no means trying to restore this van. I want to keep its originality in tact for the most part and just do projects along the way to make it more comfortable to drive.
I've already added one of Don's famous Hamburger fans with a timer switch (works great), replaced some weatherstripping, added a doghouse lid rubber seal and made a nice carpet floormat for the front.

My next project is insulating the doghouse. Since the motor is in it, I think I'm going to go with Vanishingbreed's choice of the paint-on body armor with fatmat over the top.

After that I am going to upgrade to the second gen dual line master cylinder for my brakes.

Theres a few tiny rust areas (front rain gutters and front floorboards) that I want to take care of before they get worse.

Don also helped me identify a rod knock at startup and an exhaust leak. Maybe if I buy him some Wienerschnitzel he'll help me address those problems as well... tongue

I sure like watching and reading about someone finding problems on their vans, fixing them and then making changes to make it safer and more dependable. I like to see a story from the beginning. As for that rod knock, how about drop the inspection cover on the transmission and see if those 3 bolts that hold the torque converter to the flexplate are tight. And you need to move the vacuum line for the transmission modulator off the carb and onto the intake manifold. So you are on your way,,,and here that HEI he has,,,,,could someone of returned it and they sent it to you? Keep the pictures and stories coming,,,,,

The VWs in the pics aren't mine. The bug belongs to my room mate and the bus belongs to our buddy. It needs a new transmission.

I did drive my sister's restored 69 Squareback around for a while though. Im a VW fan as well.

Finished a couple projects on the Travel Cruiser over the holidays.

Did a proper insulation job on the doghouse lid. Stripped off all the old adhesive (quite a pain in the ass), primed it, coated it in body armor and then put fat mat down. Makes a world of difference! Can't wait to do the rest of the doghouse!

Also banged out my curtains. I used drywall anchor hooks with the existing screws for the door panels, and ran lengths of spring as the curtain rod. Got the idea from all the VW curtains I've seen. You can order the spring in pretty much any dimension through McMaster-Carr.

    Hey Scott,

Yeah, those are the stock chrome bumpers. They're hard to come by, straight and in good shape.

Hooray for doghouse insulation! What did you find worked best to remove that old adhesive? I'm about to do mine. All the insulation is gone but whatever they used to stick it on is sure tough!

So you went with the real deal on the sound deadener. I'd say the engine compartment is worth paying for Dynamat. Oh wait, they don't make Fatmat. That's a whole different brand. Was your stuff thin like this:

    http://www.fatmat.com/kits/fatmat/sheets.html

So is Body Armor a spray-on deadener? I figured that was just for hard-to-get-to areas but you put it on first and then the Fatmat! Sounds good to me!

Where did you get the stuff? Locally or online?

    Keep up the good work!

This weekend I got the rest of my doghouse insulated! I used the paint on body armor stuff with the fat mat over the top. It was quite a chore getting it all in with the motor in the way, but I managed, and it turned out pretty nice.

I also finally ordered up all the supplies to upgrade my brakes to the dual line system. Should be ready to work on that this weekend.

A set of new tires (and maybe rims) is also in the near future.

Taking the van and motorcycle to camp out at the Barona Casino drag races/car show in a couple weeks. Also going to have the van in the Tiki Oasis car show in August.

    Gotta get her ready!

    Hi Scott!

Glad to hear you've been working on your van!  Big difference now that you've insulated the doghouse? Sound and heat? Would you recommend that method to others?

I want to make sure you're aware that switching to the dual master cylinder requires you to lower the anti-sway bar about 2". Don probably told you this. I'll show you the aluminum spacer blocks I made. You will also have to cut bigger "slots" in the belly pan. My pan wasn't from a Sportvan so it didn't have the proper slots to begin with (like yours), so mine doesn't really look any worse now than it did with the previous slots someone hacked into it. My body shop cleaned them up a bit when they carved the deeper slots using a router-like grinder.

I'll post some photos when I get a chance.

Ive finished up some other projects, so I've had a little more time on the weekends to put some work in on the Travel Cruise again.

The fatmat works really well and it is super easy to work with and install. It makes a good difference in sound and heat for sure. I am happy with it!

Thanks for the heads up on the rider blocks. Im actually going to be making some of those up tonight out of some square stock we have here at my work. I was just going to use my angle grinder with cut-off wheel to cut some channels into that belly pan.
