I would like to think we would give the same respect to one of those vans as anyone else here and not make commets about the paint job.

    Agreed.

people used to refer to vans as "molester vans" and sin bins. I don't like the "molester" reference at all but I can handle sin bin since back in the 70s that is what most were with all of the drugs, alcohol and wild women.

Yep. With my first early, I ended up down by the river quite a few evenings with the whoo-er du jour. I actually bought my first one when I was still living at home because My mom did not like me coming in at 2 am so I bought a van to crash where ever I liked.

I got my first van two years after being discharged from the army. I was married so no extra curricular activities but my van was always stocked with a full bar and often had a keg of Budweiser in it. I had a fold up table and chairs and a BBG hidden under the bed. We would go to the Drive In movies, pull out the BBq,Table and chairs and BBQ while watching the movie. Usually there would be 20-50 other vans parked with us and we would have a great party. Usually had a couple of ounces of good smoke, LSD, Hash, whites, mescaline and peyote too.

Ha! Nice. When I was 18, me and my buddy were the only ones with earlies in town. I had a 65 and he had a 2nd gen chevy 4 x 4, we rolled it early one morning. Didn't seem too much of a shame back then cus they were plentiful.5 or 6 of us did attempt to get out to the country with some texas shroom tea, made it about 2 miles and headed back to the driveway but we didn't leave the van for hours.

I don't see the big deal with people referring to the van as a VW. Or as the Scoobie van. Most people aren't car people, and don't know the difference between a Ford Focus and a Honda Accord. Even around Detroit, many people need to look at the badge to know the difference between a Mustang and a Camaro . . . let alone vans that are infrequently seen. The fact that they are admiring your van and are interested enough to talk to you about it is praise on its own. If they reminisce positively on Scoobie Doo, then that reflects positively onto your van.

Do people with Chargers get all bent out of shape if they're referred to as the General Lee? Or 2nd generation Trans Am owners as the "Smokey and the Bandit " car? AMC Pacer . . . like the one in Wayne's World? Herbie? What if I called a Dodge Monaco the Bluesmobile? The Thunderbird in Thelma & Louise? Who would recognize a DeLorean if it wasn't for Doc and Marty McFly? People often associate cars with TV and movies, and that's all that they have to work with, because they're not car people. Again, if they like your van enough to talk about it . . . that's a good thing.

my 3 yo son likes the SD cartoon. but instead of him looking at my van and seeing a scooby doo machine, he watches the show and yells “a VAN! VAN!” at the TV about their ride.

and a friend of mine did scream with fear when she saw my cargo van “it’s a child molester vehicle!” so now I call it my CMV when she is around.

Yes, I have had 2 chargers, 1969 and 1970 and I despised people calling it a general lee to the same amount that I hate my van being called a scooby van.

Instead of getting upset about it because it will never go away, we need to let it roll off like a duck with water on it back. Seems like a waste of energy to let something so small and turn it into a big deal

When the new guy smashed a work truck's fender a while back, I was very cool and said "$hit happens". Today, in an attempt to make a jig, a guy drove screws thru the carpet and into the particle board of my $12,000 counterweighted, air hockey type, hydraulically powered tilting glass table. He should have used of one of the homemade 4' x 8' POS tables we have surrounding the big one instead. I wanted to take my new Ramset and blast nails into each of his shinny SUV's body panels. I'm still trying to get a grip.

Point is, despite our conscious thoughts telling us to chill and save the anger and adrenaline for the day when we or our loved ones are actually in harm's way, some things can really tweak us the wrong way. I still want to punch my sister-in-law for playfully calling me a 'retard' 17 1/2 years ago.

Agree with that too. I started out small and now it's past the point of no return. It would have been cheaper to do a scooby van.

If we really cared about what other people think, would we love vans? No! If they don't understand why we love vans or make assumptions about us, who cares? We know. Our friends know (or at least will figure out why we truly love our vans). There will always be ignorant who will let their imaginations run wild about what goes on inside our panelled walls.

I'd like people to think a pack of wild dogs will attack if they touch my van! Kinda like observing wildlife from a distance, rather than trying to hand-feed a salmon to a grizzly bear!

But I don't care what kids say when they give me thumbs up! They can call it whatever they want! If they call it a Scooby Van, I'll say "Nah, that's lame... this is way cooler than that!"

What makes it great for me....was when Sasktrini and I were loading his Grimstone onto the trailer and some young kids were riding by on there bikes and one of the kids said " Oh cool, I want a van just like that". That my friends is what it is all about.

vanishingbreed wrote:we'd probably all be driving imports but I would rather walk or even crawl before even riding in an import.

Love my imports and my van. Imports have yet to leave me on the side of a road. I've driven many a Japanese car, all of which went well over 100k before I got rid of them. Current SUV is approaching 150K. Nothing major to date. Japanese build more reliable cars than ours. No disputing that. Again, to each his own.

Got two Scooby comments today alone...

For what it's worth, the guys at the shop I decided to make my go to place today were loving the van. The main guy has a 67 Chevele with 500 horses and an El Camino and I think he was just as excited about the van. I don't think these guys had seen anything like it in a long time. He called it a Scooby Doo van too. I don't think folks know where to "shoe horn" these vans, so they grab what they know.

Are Dodge guys hacked off when someone refers to the A100 as the van seen in the Cars movie?

Appreciation at any level is a good thing.

I know you have heard Fiat stands for "fix it again Tony." I grew up around MG Midgets that my dad had and he'll be the first to tell you that they were junk. On the other hand the vehicle I have had to the least work on that we have now is a Toyota. My Ford Escort is practically all Mazda except the engine and that has been the only issues with the car.

Once I get my van drivable again I will let everyone that makes a scooby comment know that it clearly has more balls that the mystery machine good imagine.
