want to replace 240, what year/size to look for Empty want to replace 240, what year/size to look for

    Howdy,
I have a 66 window van and took the 240 out and did an autopsy. Main and rod bearings worn and needed a crank kit. Took everything else off and found out it's a '69 with a '72 head, stainless steel valves look ok, all stemseals gone, piston and bores worn out with horizontal ridges. Already bored out to 60 oversize.

    Crying or Very sad

So I'm looking for a replacement 240 or 300 but not sure if the 300 would fit and up to what year.
    Any recommendations?

    Thanks, Pat

The 300 will fit, the same as a 240. I think that they switched to fuel injection in 87 so an 86 and older 300 will drop right in. You may have to reuse your oil filter adapter, oil pump pickup tube, oil pan, brackets and pulleys from your original motor.

Woodchuck Fred over on Vannin.com has an early Ford with a 300 in it. Contact him and he could answer your questions I'm sure.

the 300 will fit and the block is 60 pounds lighter than the 240 block. If you can find an Aussie block get it, they are great blocks. Throw on a classic inlines aluminum head, aluminum intake, Dui distributor, big cam, dual headers, roller rockers and a 4 barrel carb and get around 300hp with at least 350 pounds of torque. A real screaming inline 6.

    Cool info, thanks.

I found a '82 300 in Knoxville for $300, the seller doesn't know if the engine has been rebuilt nor the mileage, just says it ran great when he took it off the truck.

Any tips for used engine buyers?

My friend suspends them on engine hoist with the oil pan on a piece of plywood or while it's on an engine stand with the hoist. Keep a fire extinguisher handy and be extra careful with the gasoline. You can have backfires thru the carb and electrical sparks.

Do a compression test (Dry and Wet). Take notes.

I'm sure others here will give you more pointers.

From what I've heard, that engine's bullet proof.

Sounds dumb but check the oil & Plugs to see what they look like. Ask owner if its OK and pull valve cover to see what it looks like on inside??

Well, I bought a 1975 300 in original blue color, busted valve cover, 4 trans and starter for $250.

Pretty crudded up inside, some slight piston damage and all original bearings worn out. I guess it was never opened. But at least something to work with.
Looking for a rebuild kit now, maybe a mild cam ;-)
Any good places that offer other cams in a kit?want to replace 240, what year/size to look for 1975_311want to replace 240, what year/size to look for 1975_310

Tell Clifford Performance that Mike Cook sent you. If we get enough vanners buying from the we could get better prices down the road. They know me there. In fact they want to put their Throttle Body Injection kit on my 65 200 ci along with their rocker arm assembly, dual quad carbs and a few other goodies for their cost as long as I take the van to Hot August Nights in Reno, Nevada. I already have their headers and a mild cam.

Ooooooo look at that 300! One of the best engines ever built by Ford in my opinion.

Got it back from the machine shop last week and started assembly.

-speed pro hypereutectic pistons 30 over
    -melling torque cam
-milled head .030, valve job; ground, champered and polished crank
-new cam bearings & freeze plugs
    -new sleeved guides

    and some paint.
Bought original 240 motor mounts, hope these fit.

    Thanks.

The left motor mount didn't fit and I don't have the original 300 mount.
Should I look for the year of the motor (1975) or van (1966)?

22 years ago I did this to my '66 van, I used a 1987 300ci short block,240ci head w\adj. rockers, crane 510 lift cam, hooker 1 7\8 split headers to a set of flow masters, offy 360 intake, holly 4776 600cfm dual feed dual pump carb.,dura spark ign.,125hp shot of NOS,holly blue pump, stock C-6 and converter out of a '86 F-250, 9" posi rear w\3.89 gears and went a 14.01 at 99.1 mph with a 1.71 60 ft times, what a fun ride, got video of it pullin the left ft. wheel about 2" off the track. I would do Cape Hatteras twice a year to surf, the night before the trip I was changing to the stock 3.00 gears. Sold to a friend and there it sits in his garage un-touched, what a bummer to see, but at least it didnt meet the crusher or a pole. Hope you have as much fun with yours as I do with all of mine. I have a 64 Econo Panel with a 300ci in it. I didn't put it in .but whoever did knew what they were doing..........a very clean install. Cruised the highway nice too..........Excellent gas mileage with loads of power.

Yes it is still using the 3 speed manual too!

The 300 is an almost indestructable engine!

I'm using the 3 speed automatic, just finished up installing a new pan & gasket and set the shift rpm a little higher.
I have less than 300 miles on the 300 now and it pulls the van nicely.
I'm looking for headers, intake & carb upgrades after the break in is complete.
    Love that motor Smile
