In another thread I am looking at buying a 66 G10 and on closer inspection, I found out that the Chevy six has a hole burnt in a piston. The seller has the head off and showed me where the piston has a hole in it and a hole in the intake gasket.
Is this a big deal, or can I just drop the pan, push the piston out through the top and replace with a new one? Or should I pull the engine and do everything right? Is there anything else to look for that might have been damaged if the piston is damaged?
Thanks, you guys are very helpful!

Putting a new piston and rings would get it running again,,,,,,but how good is the rest of the engine? Can you see if you can read the top of the pistons to see if it has been bored out with .030 0r .060 stamped on them? And if there is much of a ridge at the top of the bore? Pour water around the valves see if they leak,,,,see if the pistons seem loose in the bore,,,,,,try to figure out how good that engine is,,,,,It's all about money,,,,,if you are in it for the long run, get it rebuilt,,,,,,or patch it until times get better,,,,,,and live with the fumes and smoke that a worn out engine brings.

If one piston got hot enought to melt the top out of it chances are the rest suffered some damage as well. Only one way to fix this one. Anything less would just be a temporary fix.

chevy 6's are cheap, just swap in a good running motor. i recently swapped the cam and head on my 250, it took longer than it would of to swap the engine.
