Re: chevy L6 id
according to A.E.R.A. service book that engine number was used for and included
buick / chev / olds / pontiac 1963-1978 also truck
230 cubic inch
250 cubic inch
you no doubt have the early version so without measuring the bore i'll bet a 230 cid. with about a .60 thou overbore you will come up with a 250 but they probably changed connecting rods as well to get the bigger cubic inch engine. common practice years ago. the 198 slant six dodge has the same bore as the 225 but the rods are a different length and will push the piston out past the first ring if you mix them up. what you want is an old 292 chevy 6 cyl block. they have tons of torque. look for an old farm truck with a 6 in it. quite likely a 292.

Re: chevy L6 id
Chevy inline 6 power manual by Leo Santucci also states it to be a 66--70 230/3.6L, or a 62-79 250/4.1L(66-79 w/intregal intake, but those are no good)!!
If you can also get the head casting # we can get a better idea of which block, 230 or 250, with the stroke & piston compression height being the only difference, the head can narrow results further.
Hope these helped.

Re: chevy L6 id
the head casting # is 3824437
I'm pretty sure it's a 230 ,, I'm hoping if the heads good i might be able to put 292 valves in it looks like i may be back to rebuilding the 250 in the truck

Re: chevy L6 id
from what i've seen the intregal head is junk ! the block is good and you can put and old style head on one, but the new style heads crack and you can't get any hp out of them.

Re: chevy L6 id
Head casting#3824437 would be of course listed on either 230 or 250 block, only other way really is to get the id off the distributor pad or get the crank casting #.Most likely is a 230 but you never know!!
Scott, as far as i have been told and seen on only 1 set up, the 1966-79 250 intregal head warps, cracks,& just plain no good, and so was always told to avoid them.
I have never personally had 1 , but wont try to find out if it is true either so I opt to stay clear, of course alot of people tell me to avoid the 194 as they have been referred to as "boat`anchors" & " large paperweights", but i havent had problems with them and they work for me, so I guess it is what you get out of what you have that works best.

Re: chevy L6 id
casting#3824437
from the same A.E.R.A. book.cylinder head 3824437 avalible on. 1963 - 1976 chev 230 - 250 - 292
the early book does not say anything about this head being used on 292 engines but the first reference i found was in the 1978 book. i am not sure when that engine was in production but as far as torque and horse power upgrades go do up a 292. hell even crane cams have a performance cam for that engine!!
