4Speed Tranny
Looks like I need a rebuilt 4 speed for my '63. How available are they? It's been suggested to go to a 3speed, and I will if necessary, but I'm looking for a four speed that has been rebuilt already. Any leads will be appreciated.Thanx,Don

Re: 4Speed Tranny
is your 4speed repairable? i would feel better having my trans rebuilt rather then buy one from a guy who "says it was rebuilt", this way you know exactly what you have...might cost more but in the long run it can save you alot of time and money. while you have the trans out dont forget to check the clutch and throwout bearing!

Throw the four speed away. Get a good three speed or better yet a C4 or AOD

Re: 4Speed Tranny
Mike,, with all due respect,, he has a 63, meaning a small six and a donout mount, the only way I know of for him to put in an AOD would be to have the dual bell pattern 200 like yours, but I suspect he has the 170. If that's the case, then he is kinda stuck with a donout mount tranny.
In regards to a C4 there are only three options that I see. The first would be of course to change the sheet metal engine hangers over to use the lowered ones from a 64 C4, and the hard to locate donout mount tail, or use a car C4 and put the under tranny mount short tail stocks I have here with my cross member. Last combo would be again the dual pattern 200 and either the small six bell C4 or the big bell C4, again all back to the tail stock selection...

Re: 4Speed Tranny
I'm not having any luck on this tranny or parts. What is it going to take to switch to a 3 speed or what other manual trans will "bolt up" with minimal fab work? Thanx all again.

Re: 4Speed Tranny
Im gonna be heading to Detroit in the next few weeks. I could bring you everything you need for the swap to 3 speed if you wanna meet me. You ll need the tranny, column shifter, and shift rods *may* be different also.I ll be just south of Mo-town off of 75. If you knew what you needed to fix yours your search would be a lot easier.

Re: 4Speed Tranny
Yes I know, I was trying to get him to go with the C4 you mentioned with your cross member since I know you need the business and he would end up with a good trans. Those four speeds are junk. I wouldn't wish one on anybody.Old Skool wrote:Mike,, with all due respect,, he has a 63, meaning a small six and a donout mount, the only way I know of for him to put in an AOD would be to have the dual bell pattern 200 like yours, but I suspect he has the 170. Re: 4Speed Tranny
Mike,, Thnx,,,, I have NEVER heard one good thing about the Dag box, mostly of how weak it is,, looks like another example right now???????? I have a pile of shift rods here, but bulky to ship. I would think you could modify the four speed rods to work, but what a loss!!! I would trade for them easily, just to have a set for my columns here.

A couple of years ago I met a guy who worked for Ford back in the 60s. He said he had 40 of the Dags that HE SMUGGLED OUT OF THE PLANT.ALL NEW AND NEVER INSTALLED IN A VEHICLE. HE SAID THEY WERE THE WORST TRANNIES FORD EVER MADE.HE WANTED $400.00 APIECE AND YOU HAD TO BUY ALL OF THEM.

Re: 4Speed Tranny
It sounds like fixing the Dag is a big hassle, this time and end up with the same known weaker transmission. I would seriously consider the three speed from Tim.
I was studying output yokes today, and found the short tailed autos output yoke to be the same as the 240 manual output yoke. I have a big bell 240 manual 3spd here, with a donout mount tail on it using the 240 yoke, so my point there is, the donout mount tail interchange on the 240 trans, but, ALSO the spline and the seal dimensions are the same. However, I don't know if the small six output yoke is the same?? It may have the same seal dimensions, but NOT the same output yoke spline setup??? so I am wondering if you could simply swap the yokes to accommodate which ever drive shaft you had, if the length is still correct. That depending on also, the rear axle you have. The rare bare 64 H/D drive shaft having a small front u joint, and the larger rear u joint for the 9" rear axle. All kinds of combos there???
BTW,, I have a 240 bell and trans with a donout mount here for sale, if anyone is looking for that combo...

Hey Tim
Are you goin to Carlisle in June...I just registered.
Hey Don...if Tim can't get you all you need..I'm sure he will , but if all else fails..
and I mean if ALL else fails
my donor has the standard 170 cu in with the 3 spd tranny and the standard driveshaft...
I just have not started cutting it up yet.

Try this guy, he remarked he had one a while ago?????????? I wanted to say something to help you, but he and I are not getting along on a deal, so I was trying to keep quiet,, your better off with the 3spd anyways, but you are persistant about the Dag??????????//
SO,,,, keep it neutral, skip me, just try and help yourself,, I don't have the time for anymore crap about him........If it works and you are taken care of, then its all good!~!!!!! vic

Re: 4Speed Tranny
There has been a lot of good advice here but it seems to be falling on deaf ears. The Dags are and always will be junk, worth more as scrap metal. If you enjoy problems with your Econo get another dag and you will have them. The 3 speed is a much better option unless you want to spend the time and money to get a correct C4 for it and do the conversion with either Vics automatic column and cross member or a floor shifter and Vics cross member.
