Homemade glovebox liner Empty Homemade glovebox liner

Post by Guest Sun Sep 28, 2008 9:53 am

So my van came with no glovebox liner, just a broken door. A parts van supplied me with a new door and a very deteriorated cardboard liner.

I traced the old one to a piece of cardboard, cut it out, glued it together, added the factory thumbtack/nuts, painted it black and installed it! Oh ya, I added some seam sealer in the corners to reinforce them as some of the folds cracked the cardboard.

A couple of the factory nuts broke out and I couldn't get the lower ones in, but the box is there and works well.

nice job did you give it a coat of fiberglass resin to stiffen it up and stop the moisture? over time moisture does a job on cardboard

There's a good idea! I was thinking to myself "How can I make this thing stiffer or waterproof or something?"

So just fiberglass resin with hardener I guess?

i would sugest a "layer" of resin with a layer of the fiberglass "mesh" followed up with a coat of resin, on the outer part of the box . the inside id just use the resin. that should last a while.

As I put the old deteriorated liner in the garbage, the thought crossed my mind that others might want one. So I saved it. Everytime I touch it, more falls off it. It's really brittle.

Perhaps I'll trace it onto some paper then I can just mail it to you? You have to cut and trim a little here and there. I used a hot glue gun to put it together, and there are factory nuts with teeth that were stuck into the cardboard, but I only managed to get 3 of them to work. Mounting into your dash will have to be a custom kind of thing.

You have to remove the defroster duct to get it under there.

    Sound like a plan?

Here is another idea I made years ago for a 2nd gen Chevy it's made out of plastic sign material, it's made from two sheets so there is more rivets showing then if I used one. It turned out super strong I glued some rubber on the bottom and was able to put speed nuts on it like the original that clip on the edge over the holes.

Hate to dig up an old thread, but before I drop $35 + $15 shipping on one from eBay, I wanted to see if this pattern / template got posted anywhere or if I could still get my hands on one.

Mine kinda disintegrated a while ago. Gently took the remaining pieces and made a replica cage out of 1/8" square screen, covered it with bondo and embedded the original screw clips. That sucker ain't fallin' apart on me again...

I got mine in yesterday and was eager to install it. Went outside in the dark with a flashlight only to realize that I am going to have to remove something to get it installed. I am hoping I can just pull the dash pad and slip it in through the glovebox door. Otherwise I will have to disconnect the big vent under the dash.

I also realized that I am going to have to get some kind of clips that attach around the edge of the opening for the screws to go in to.

I've removed both the dash pad and the glovebox door and there is no way this thing is fitting in there. I tried going up from underneath but with the big vent down there it is just way to tight. Am I going to have to remove that vent system in order to get this glovebox in or is there some trick that I'm not familiar with?

To install mine I removed that square vent/heater duct under the dash. 2 of the top 3 screws that head toward the front cowl are tough to get back in so I just left them out, a couple decades ago, and it hasn't had any negative effects. 2 of the top screws going into the heater housing only need to be loosened because the holes in the duct are slotted, or, half-holes so that the duct can slide in and out without having to re-insert the screws from an impossible position. Takes a little time and patience, but while you're in there you might want to check all the connections on the heater pipes, etc.

Most auto parts stores carry a variety of similar clips. You may have to improvise - maybe use some goop to hold them in place.

I got everything I need but am going to save this project for the weekend. I might as well clean and repaint the metal heater housings on that side while they are out.

Thanks for the info and tips, Rebar.
