all the aftermarket parts types=jegs, summit, ect, sell the tubular tranny mounts- as im doing same with a 700R4- i opted to use an 8" drop one=about $70.00 bux & i can always space the center mount up if needed. 700's are/need to be lowered in these vans to fit. Depends on what tranny & van =whats needed. cheers

Yeah I have a 2 speed power glide and I am going to replace it with a 700r 4. I am assuming from what I have read I will need a new cross member for the swap. If I can buy one for under $100 that would work out great. I am hoping someone has a link to one that works.

We surely got lots of choices of what transmissions that will work in our vans,,,,,,,if it dont have the Van hanger built in on it so it can hang from the floor of the van, then you use a car or truck transmission and you use something that goes under it to hold it up,,,,,,,,

So pretty much just buy a crossmember and make it work? Are there so many variables that any one particular crossmember will not work with a 1st gen and a 700r 4?

,,,,,just as long as it can be mounted onto the frame, the 7004r trans mount can connect to it and you can get the trans to fit level on it,,,,,,,

remember - the 400R4 must be loweredin the frame as the case is longer & hits the rear tunnel / floor area! affraid The pix doni has of the 3rd gen xmember is what it will look like or canuse a 8" drop tubular xmember from summitt! cheers

One of the big things is to have it set up so you can drop the crossmember fairly easily if you have to service the trans.

I don't know the details of a 700-4r, but I can tell you the 200-r4 is almost exactly the same length and the Powerglide. I replaced my Powerglide with a 200-r4 and found that the driveshaft length didnt need to be changed, the driveshaft splines matched the transmission (where it slides into the transmission), the bell housing bolted right up without an adapter, and most transmission shops dump 200-r4 transmissions so you can get them pretty cheap.

I lucked out, I bought one on Craigslist for $100 that was pulled from an 87 Monty Carlo. Yeah I took a chance, but for $100 it was worth it.

I did have to lower the engine a few inches to get the bell housing from hitting the back of the doghouse, but I think that will be a problem with the 700-4r as well.
