smell - gasoline smell Empty gasoline smell

Post by softesttouch Fri Oct 22, 2010 10:30 pm

i am on my 3rd 65-66 chevy van. every one has the same issue--whenever i turn it off, the smell of raw gasoline fills the inside. not much of a problem during warm weather, as windows are always down. but cool/cold weather it's a real problem, since windows are up, especially if the plan is just to fall into the back and crawl into my sleeping bag. how have you smart guys found to remedy this problem?

welcome to the site!!!! Maybe Don will see this and give you a picture of what he has done. He has a small fan under there to draw the smell away.

    welcome !!!!
If your smelling raw fuel, it's never a good thing and should be fix as soon as possible (It's a safety thing!).

There are several possibilities for the smell. One may be the needle valve in your carb is sticking open or simply not closing all the way causing the fuel line pressure to bleed off into the carb when you shut it off. Or any one of the fuel line fittings or connections is loose/not sealing. Also crawl under the van after running it for a while and stick you head up near the top of the fuel tank (above the rearend where the fuel line goes though the cross beam) and see if you smell fuel, this could mean your fuel tank sending unit seal is leaking. It could also be as simple and the carb ajustments are to rich.....

hey guys, thanks for the fast reply. almost sure it is coming from within the engine housing.....i'll bet it is some carb issue, but then again, why have i had it on all 3 of mine?? I ALWAYS JUST THOUGHT IT WAS NORMAL!!!!!

Happened a few time to most of us. I always found the cause. I can ignore many things.. Not gas fumes! That's an accident just waiting to happen....

Thats just the way it is,,,,,,,the Carb needs air to work,,,,,so the gas is just sitting there,,,,,,there are no evaporative emission controls on it,,,,,the gas fumes vent into the doghouse,,,,,,,and if you got a flooding carb or when the engine is hot, it smells worst,,,,,,my newest fix is my Hamburger fan,,,,,,,I HATE sitting in my van smelling gas when I eat my Hamburger,,,,,,so I attached a small fan on top of my bellypan that I turn on to cool down the radiator and carb, and blow the fumes out the back and in a few minutes everything cools down and back to normal,,,,,,I would never leave home without that fan,,,,,,,,

It's like out of a 90 Accord,,,,,,you got a 200 degree radiator sitting next to you,,,,,heating up you and the doghouse,,,,this fan actually keeps the doghouse and you cooler,,,,,and I got a 60 minute wind up timer on to set it and forget it to keep the smell down when I park in the garage,,,,,,and I don't have to sit there and crank the hell out of a hot engine to clear out the heat soak gas in the intake,,,,,,like I said,,,,i would NEVER leave home with out it,,,,,,,

,,,,of course if you are some kind of tree hugging, politically correct type of person,,,,,,you can put the OFFICIAL GM Chevy Van vapor recovery system on your van,,,,,,,5 hoses running up to this plastic bottle in the back of the van behind the right rear tail light,,,,,,,( I just have to think that somewhere, sometime, a vanner would strike up a spark in that area).
