,,,I think the easiest way is to see if it has a vacuum modulator or where it is,,,,,,the TH350 has it on the passenger side,,,,,the PowerGlide has it on the drivers side and the 700r4/2004R aint got one,,,,,,,those are the 4 automatics that end up in these vans......

In addition to rust and dents, you gotta realize that a lot of stuff has been swapped/changed over the years. Laughing
I thought the engine in my van would be the 273 stocker. Sure looked like it from on top. Crawled underneath and it was a (tired) 360!

Th350's only came stock on 1969 and 70 Chevy Vans,,,,they used a pick up trans with that ring type mount. So does your trans have its rear mount hanging from the floor or is there a crossmember under the transmission. The trans might be hitting the floor so the engine crossmember might be lowered down. Has the Doghouse been modified any?

Nothing has been modified. The trans mount is a ring, no crossmember. Even the column and shifter appear to be original.

Id like to guess someone has swapped out the steering column, there isnt much difference to look at between the 2 other than the lower end of things.
I had some 2 spd column pics but cant find them ,,

Well the column shifter sometimes gives me fits going from neutral to park so I'm going to build a console in front of the doghouse with a floor shifter.

,,,,and your shift shaft goes into the collar on that column instead of being bolted on the side of the column,,,,,,,so,,,,,,seeing that the van TH350 did not get invented until 1969,,,,,,,,,guess what trans and steering column someone put in your van,,,,,,

This is the steering column that is in the 1st Gen, 1964-66, Chevy/Gmc vans. Hazard flashers with the button in the column was not invented yet. And IF you have a 3 speed automatic shift indicator on the column, that did not get invented until 1969. (they only had 2 speed PowerGlides until then). So,,,,,,,you have the column out of a 1969 or 70 Chevy/Gmc van

Cool, thanks. It was well done so much it looked factory. Even the road dirt was evenly distributed like nothing was ever touched. LOL

    Post by donivan65 Tue Dec 07, 2010 9:49 am

It's all about history,,,,,,they keep inventing something better,,,,,like this miraculous ring,,,,,,people were tired of PowerGlides shifting low to high, low to high, so they came up with a 3 speed, the TH350. and since the Vans had this weird way of hanging the transmissions from the floor instead of putting a crossmember under the trans like the rest of the world, they invented this ring. And then, all of the sudden, people thought they needed a TH350 trans in their vans. And they were willing to pay like up to $250 for that ring. And these rings only came on 69 and 70 Chevy Vans and only came, AND FIT, onto TH350 transmissions. Now the trans of choice is the 700r4 or 2004r,,,,,,they are overdrive transmissions,,,,,,and the ring does not fit them,,,,,,so the #1 automatic transmission topic nowadays is how to build a transmission mount to install a 700r4 or 2004r transmission in a 1964-70 Chevy/Gmc van. But keep hanging around with us, you will learn everything you need to know about Vintage-Vans,,,,,,,,,,

The #1 upgrade for a 1st Gen, 1964-66, Chevy/Gmc van is to get rid of that suicide 1 line master cylinder. 1 leak, ANYWHERE, you aint got no brakes. So in 1967, they invent a 2 line, so you got 2 independent brake systems AND a light on the dash to tell you if there is a problem in the system. I would never be driving a van with that single line master cylinder, when you can go over to NAPA and get a 2 line for less than $20.

My 65 had some in it , but they were just bolted down with the seat mounts ,, almost looked like an after thought or added later.

63chevyvan? wrote:IMO it looks to be a 64; don't know why it has a "C" prefix. My manual says the first number should be the year. GM changes did not always follow the calendar year. Often, they would incorporate changes for the next model year into current production, not just on Jan 1st. My 64 was built late in the 1964 production run and has the larger grill opening(change for 65), as well the radio antena on the drivers side(change for 65). Just my 2 cents.

    Another Example:

My 1970 Chevelle is an early production run car with BBC frame reinforcements but a SBC motor, first design rear bumper mounting(thru hole/ early, slots/late) and an early trim pkg. (top edge mount fender spears and front valances trim.). The trim pkg. was deleted later in the year. I purchased this all stock car from the original owner. Some of this you only find upon disassembly of the vehicle; ask me how I know.

didn't know that gm doesn't follow the calendar yr when it comes to vins sometimes i get them wrong Embarassed the van looks nice thou would like to see more of it and its progress. love the agent orange van... can't get enough of it. Very Happy
