How rare is this?
I'm buying a 1962 chevy van with a factory automatic. Just how rare is this piece?

Re: How rare is this?
They didn't make Chevy vans till 1964 unless it is a Corvair.

a lot of people think of Corvairs as Chevy vans and they are right , they were made by Chevy. This person did not designate G10. I have a feeling he has the year wrong and it is a G10RodStRace wrote:CORVAIR?

That's what I tried to tell the guy selling it, but some people are stuck on what they think is fact. I told him it was a '64. So how rare is a '64 G-10 with a factory auto?

Re: How rare is this?
Well maybe it not a 64 either??
Lets see a picture.
Is it a factory auto? Autos were less popular but availible.
If its got an auto it probobly has other desireable goodies.

Re: How rare is this?
Thinking we need pic's!!!! With one or two we can talk all day and it means nothing..................
GMC made a G15 in 1963 it was the first. Chevy followed in 1964. With all the "bad" titling going on I am curious as well.. Hell it could be a 2nd Gen for all we know...

Re: How rare is this?
I would like to see a VIN number that shows a van built in 1963,,,,,,of course GM could of put those out early to let the Canadians find out first about the handling and braking and crashes before they sold them to Americans,,,,,,

Re: How rare is this?
I don't know if anyone can give the OP an answer to the question anyway.
How rare is an automatic Corvair or G van for a specific year?
First, are there accurate records that have this breakdown?
Second, is it an original automatic, or has it been added during the past?
Third, how many are still around?
Seems like whenever a question of rarity is brought up, the root reason is value.
Rarity does not always equal sought after. Even if supply is low, demand is the other half of the equation. With demand, there is originality and then the actual usage. An automatic is more popular for usage. However, is someone willing to pay a premuim for an original automatic over and above the price of simply swapping one in?
The vintage vans don't yet have a big draw for the people looking for an all original, numbers matching, rare and desirable optioned collector's item.
A 1968 327/automatic panel van that is in decent driver shape isn't going to pull a higher price if it still has the original engine and transmission compared to a similar van that had a small block and transmission added properly. There just isn't that type of buyer. With the economy hitting the collector muscle car market as hard as it has, I doubt this will change any time soon.
While there will always be a select few low mileage, pristine or very nice original unrestored vehicles around that will command a premium, the rest will depend on market demand, and the typical van buyer is not the same as the typical car collector. That's my 2 cents, anyway.

Re: How rare is this?
My father was inquiring if I was going to keep my van stock. My reply was that most of these were either work trucks or campers that had had a hard life. Not much of a market for a stock van over a modified. Not going to be looking to sell it regardless. I already lost one, not going to lose another.
Automatics - look at what the price was to upgrade to a V8 and/or automatic as a percentage of the sticker price. A little bit more back then compared to now. I wonder how much more it was to upgrade to the 3 speed auto over the 2 speed 'Glide.

Re: How rare is this?
According to http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/VIN.htm
1960-64
first digit should be model year 0-4
Second digit should be a G for a van
Third and forth would indicate GVWR and wheelbase
Fifth would be a 2-9. 5=panel
Sixth would be a letter indicating plant.
http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f19/chevrolet-historical-services-similar-10966/
says
"You can get a restoration packet that has generic info on your year/model car, but no specific info on that particular car as built. "
and
"Yeah, the Restoration Packet is the only item of which I am familiar. While I know they ask for your VIN, there is no car-specific information included in the packet. However, the packet does have information to help you decipher the codes on the car....
The RP is available through the Chevrolet Customer Service line, 1-800-222-1020."

Re: How rare is this?
Here's another link
http://www.decodethis.com/PatternDetail.aspx?id=47
Let's skip the C at the beginning, and look at this 125 5 9 105426.
1=chevrolet
25=body (doesn't list van)
5= year 1965
9=plant (not shown)
105426=serial sequence
That makes a bit more sense. So it looks like it's a 1965 van.

Re: How rare is this?
Next mystery is figuring out engine size, which I will check the #s against those in this forum and trans specs. Then I need side and back doors, door and window handles, sheetmetal, windshield and gasket, etc. etc. You know, the usual.
